Schlage Keypad Deadbolt: Key or Keyless Operation

Feb. 1, 2007
Schlage’s BE365 Keypad Deadbolt with Turn-Lock Feature can be used with or without a key.

The average busy family races from place to place, rushing to jobs, school, social events and children’s activities, leaving little time for the necessities. Parents, and especially children, very often leave home without locking the deadbolt lock. This is not an urban legend. Surveys have confirmed the fact that a significant percentage of people do not lock their deadbolt when leaving their residence. It does not seem to matter that it takes only seconds to insert a key and throw the bolt. The scary part is that people are willing to leave their possessions not fully protected as daytime burglaries are on the rise.

To encourage people to lock their deadbolts and better secure their homes, Schlage has developed the Keypad Deadbolt with Turn-Lock Feature; part number BE365. This deadbolt is a standalone, electro-mechanical, single-sided auxiliary lock for residential and light commercial applications. The non-handed BE365 Keypad Deadbolt uses a patented commercial grade clutching motor drive that has been tested to 1 million cycles. The vandal resistant free-spinning deadbolt thumbturn resists forced rotation.

The Schlage BE365 Keypad Deadbolt, a Grade 2 BHMA/ANSI certified deadbolt lock, provides excellent security, being equipped with a one inch throw bolt. It can be operated either mechanically using a key or electronically using the keypad.

The Schlage Keypad Deadbolt is equipped with a 10-digit keypad and a Schlage labeled button above the keypad buttons. Pressing the Schlage button illuminates the keypad and clears any previous entries. The deadbolt is operated using the thumbturn on the keypad assembly.

The Keypad Deadbolt can be keylessly operated to not only retract the deadbolt, but also to extend the deadbolt, quickly locking the door without using a key as you leave. Using the keypad, a person leaving just presses the Schlage button and rotates the exterior thumbturn while the Schlage button is illuminated. Door is locked. No key is required.

As added protection, having a Schlage BE365 Keypad Deadbolt, you need never be locked out or have to keep a key hidden just in case you forget or lose your keys. The Schlage Keypad Deadbolt eliminates the need to remember where the hidden key was last placed. To gain access through the deadbolt, just enter one of the four digit User Codes. To resist phishing for a User Code, the BE365 emits warning sounds after four incorrect codes have been entered. The keypad becomes disabled for 30 seconds.

This electro-mechanical deadbolt comes pre-set with a random six-digit Programming Code and two random four-digit User Codes. The six-digit Programming Code is changeable. The Programming Code can add or delete User Codes; however, it cannot operate the lock. Up to 19 User Codes of the 10,000 possible User Code combinations can be programmed into the deadbolt. This enables the use of temporary User Codes that can be erased after the service person or visitor no longer requires access into the residence without affecting the family members’ User Codes.

Programming the Schlage Keypad Deadbolt takes place at the keypad. There is no need to disassemble the lock for standard programming functions. The Programming Code is used to add or delete User Codes, disable/enable all Users Codes, change the Programming Code and turn beeper on or off.

Under normal operating conditions, the nine volt battery should last approximately three years. However, Schlage recommends replacing the battery every year. If the battery drains beneath optimal operating conditions, the deadbolt will sound a series of high/low beeps after a valid User Code has been entered. In addition, the Schlage button will flash red. It is strongly recommended that the battery be replaced as soon as possible.

The Schlage BE365 Keypad Deadbolt is equipped with non-volatile memory. Should the battery become dead, all settings are retained in the on-board memory, including the Programming Code and the User Codes.

Should the battery drain beyond being able to operate the lock, the Schlage BE365 Keypad Deadbolt is equipped with mechanical key override. A five-pin solid brass C-keyway lock cylinder is located in the center of the exterior thumbturn. The lock cylinder can be rekeyed to existing Schlage five-pin tumbler locks. Schlage’s supplemental Keypad Lock Re-Keying Kit, part number 38-030, contains special components used by the Keypad Deadbolt. Pin tumblers are not included.

The BE365 Keypad Deadbolt is available in two styles, the Plymouth or the Camelot. Nine finishes are available, including the Ultima™ Bright Brass (505) and Antique Brass(609), Bright Chrome (625), Satin Chrome (626), Oil-Rubbed Bronze (613), Aged Bronze (716), satin Nickel (619), Antique Pewter (620) and Black Matte (available April 2007).

The Schlage BE365 Keypad Deadbolt has a lifetime limited mechanical and finish warranty, as well as a one-year electronics warranty.
