Locksmiths are on the front lines of security, and being concerned with the safety of their customers is part of the job. But it isn’t often when a locksmith is involved directly with a customer’s safety.

It happened recently in Midway, Utah, a small town not far from Salt Lake City, when a locksmith hired to perform a simple residential rekey job ending up rescuing a woman who said she was being held against her will.

In multiple news reports, Greg, whose last name was withheld for safety reasons, said he had been hired to change the lock on the woman’s front door. When he arrived, a man was with her.

While he worked, Greg said, he noticed the that woman had written “911” on her hand. Nothing was said, but the intent was clear, Greg said. Further arousing suspicion was that the woman had to ask the man for her phone to pay Greg digitally.

After he left, Greg called the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office, and police arrested the man, charging him with multiple counts, including aggravated kidnapping and assault.
