The locksmith industry is facing a challenge that nearly every shop owner recognizes immediately: finding qualified technicians. Across North America, experienced locksmiths are retiring, customer demand continues to grow, and many businesses are struggling to recruit and develop new talent quickly enough to keep pace. At the same time, the industry is becoming increasingly sophisticated: electronic access control, cloud-connected systems, wireless credentials, and integrated security platforms are creating new opportunities for locksmiths willing to expand their skills.

But here's where shops often run into trouble: rushing technicians to work on electronics before they’ve mastered the fundamentals. While electronic access control represents the future of many security applications, successful technicians still need a strong understanding of the opening itself. Before they install an electric strike, program a controller, or troubleshoot a credential reader, they need to understand doors, frames, hardware, locking mechanisms, and life-safety requirements.

 

Why the Old Way of Training Has Limits

Locksmithing has always been a trade built on apprenticeship and on-the-job training. A veteran locksmith mentors you, shows you the ropes, and gives you opportunities to learn hands-on. While that approach has worked for decades, it creates inconsistency.

When training depends entirely on the person teaching, knowledge gaps can result. Good habits get passed down, but so do shortcuts, workarounds, and outdated practices. New technicians often learn how to do something without ever understanding why it's done that way.

This challenge becomes even more significant when staffing shortages limit the amount of time experienced technicians can dedicate to training newcomers. When you're short-handed and a new hire needs to be productive quickly, there's real temptation to accelerate the learning curve before the foundation is solid. 

Structured education helps solve this problem, not by replacing on-the-job learning, but by creating consistent standards and ensuring that technicians learn the fundamentals before branching out into advanced topics and specialized disciplines.

 

Always Start with the Opening

Many newcomers assume locksmithing is mostly about keys and cylinders. While keying remains a critical part of the job, locksmiths interact with the entire opening. Every new technician should have a thorough understanding of four core areas: hanging the door, securing the door, controlling the door, and protecting the door.

Understanding hinges, pivots, and door movement is fundamental because the lock mechanism depends on proper door operation. If the door sags, binds, or doesn’t close correctly, it makes the locksmith’s job a lot more complicated, if not outright impossible in extreme cases.

Securing the door means getting familiar with cylindrical locks, mortise locks, deadbolts, exit devices, storefront hardware, and lock functions across different applications. Technicians should understand how different lock types operate, where they’re commonly used, and how to service and install them correctly.

Controlling the door introduces closers, floor closers, and automatic operators. Improper closer adjustment is one of the most common problems you'll find on commercial openings. It won’t matter if the lock’s installed properly if the door doesn’t fully shut.

Protecting the door involves understanding the accessories and hardware designed to extend the life of the opening and keep it operating safely, including edges, surfaces, and operational components.

These areas may not seem as exciting as cloud-based access control systems, but they form the foundation of everything that follows, which almost always results in less time spent troubleshooting.

 

Hardware Fluency Before Technology

One of the most common shortcomings among newer technicians is limited familiarity with commercial hardware. That’s because many locksmiths get started in the industry working primarily on residential locks before encountering commercial openings. The transition can be jarring. Commercial buildings involve different lock functions, door preparations, exit devices, fire-rated assemblies, and code requirements that don’t apply to residential applications.

Technicians need to be able to identify lock functions, understand handing, recognize common preparations, and determine whether a piece of hardware is appropriate for a given application.

For example, installing a credential reader on a door that doesn’t have proper egress hardware creates a life-safety problem. Also, choosing an electric strike without understanding the frame construction can lead to a surprising amount of rework. In short, access control can’t fix a mechanical issue.

 

Proficiency Through Practice

Knowledge is important, but locksmithing is a hands-on profession. New technicians need to be comfortable with drills, routers, hole saws, templates, chisels, measuring tools, and specialized locksmith equipment. Precision matters, because even small errors can affect door integrity, hardware performance, and the customer's opinion of your work.

The best training environments prioritize repetition. Installing one cylindrical lock shows you the process, but installing locks repeatedly builds competence. The same holds true for closers, exit devices, storefront hardware, and strike preparations.

Experienced locksmiths can often diagnose a problem within minutes because they've physically worked with thousands of openings. There's no shortcut to that kind of pattern recognition, so new technicians should seek training opportunities that prioritize hands-on experience.

 

Understand Keying and Master Key Systems

What truly sets locksmiths apart from other security professionals is their expertise in key systems.

Every aspiring locksmith should become well-versed in cylinder anatomy, pinning procedures, key generation, rekeying practices, and master key system design. Understanding how access is controlled mechanically provides valuable insight into broader security concepts. Master keying, in particular, builds critical thinking and planning skills and provides an understanding of the access hierarchy that directly translates to working with electronic systems later.

Even as electronic credentials become more common, mechanical key systems aren't going away. They’re still essential in commercial, institutional, healthcare, education, and government settings. A technician who isn't confident with master keying is missing out on one of the profession's defining competencies.

 

The Right Time to Transition into Electronics

Once a technician has solid mechanical grounding, the move into electronics becomes much more natural because they already understand what the electronics are supposed to do.

Electronic access control isn't a separate profession or harder than mechanics; it’s just different. The door still needs to close properly. The lock still needs to function correctly. The hardware still needs to meet code. Electronics add components and capabilities, but they don't replace the fundamentals underneath.

The biggest mistake organizations make is expecting technicians to learn electronics through abbreviated seminars or one-day introductions. Wiring, power distribution, circuit logic, and electrified hardware require the same kind of disciplined, progressive learning that mechanical locksmithing does.

 

Where to Start with Electronics

For locksmiths starting to work with electronic access control, basic electrical concepts should be the priority. Technicians need to understand voltage, current, resistance, conductors, power supplies, and circuit behavior. They should learn the difference between series and parallel wiring, how to read wiring diagrams, and how to identify common components used in access control systems. And even though it’s low-voltage equipment, knowing which circuit breaker to shut off before starting a wiring job is also an important habit to develop.

New technicians should become familiar with electrified hardware terminology, such as electric strikes, electromagnetic locks, electrified locks, request-to-exit devices, power transfer devices, credential readers, and control equipment, understanding what each component does and how they interact.

Reading wiring diagrams and elevation drawings is a skill in itself, one that pays off constantly in the field. So is understanding the sequence of operations. Being able to describe what should happen when a credential is presented makes troubleshooting significantly faster and less frustrating.

Most importantly, technicians must understand life-safety requirements because decisions about electronic hardware can directly affect emergency egress and code compliance.

Technology will keep changing, but the fundamentals won't. Doors will still need to close properly, lock securely, and let people exit safely in an emergency. That’s why the path to becoming an exceptional electronic access control technician still begins with becoming an exceptional locksmith first.
