The UK Master Locksmiths Association is working to develop a new type of lock to prevent break-ins by burglars, following a spate in West Yorkshire.
Research shows that the use of a particular type of lock bypass is on the increase, with more than 27% of burglaries in the county carried out in this way in December 2011 alone, according to the Master Locksmiths Association.
The method, which cannot be described for obvious reasons, can easily be stopped, however.
The Master Locksmiths Association, the UK's biggest not-for-profit association for the locksmithing industry, has worked alongside their testing and accreditation subsidiary company, Sold Secure, to develop a Diamond Standard for cylinder locks.
Using locks which meet this standard should minimise risks from this break-in method in the future.
The security experts at Sold Secure develop their test specifications with input from the police, insurers and various other stakeholders.
This enables the consumer to rest assured that products that have passed these standards have been tested to the highest levels.
The SS 312 Diamond Standard was created over 12 months ago in order to counter all common methodologies used by burglars, including the particular lock bypass method in West Yorkshire.
Recognised by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and insurers, this Diamond Standard will ensure the locking system is protected against manipulation.
Getting hold of a Diamond Standard lock is the first step towards a more secure home, but it is also worth using a professionally qualified locksmith such as a member of the Master Locksmiths Association to specify and fit your lock for you to ensure it is not compromised in any way.
Consider consulting an official MLA member for advice and tips on maintaining or upgrading your home security using both simple practices and the latest in security technology.
