Mechanical ignition locks provide an extremely important level to vehicle security. For a while, I thought the problems vehicle manufacturers are having and will continue to have regarding security of electronic ignition systems would be sufficient to reinstate some variation of the mechanical ignition lock.
Unfortunately, Generals Motors started 2015 with yet another mechanical ignition lock recall involving in excess of 83,000 GM sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. The recall concerns 2011 and 2012 models, plus vehicles that had been repaired with defective ignition lock parts.
Now, I believe that the “death knell” for the mechanical ignition lock has rung.
