Forging Our Future Together: 70 Years of HPC
Seventy years is more than a mere milestone. It reflects the people, the passion, and the precise craft that have shaped this industry.
Since 1956, HPC has been part of the locksmith trade, not from the outside, but from the bench, the shop, and the job site. It is built into the tools and machines that locksmiths rely on every single day. At the center of it all is one constant truth: the locksmith is the backbone of security.
As we mark 70 years, this moment is not just about looking back. It is about leaning in. It is about digging deeper into the trade and strengthening the connections that continue to move this industry forward.
This industry has never been built in isolation. It is built through shared experience, through conversations that happen every day, and through the quiet expertise that develops over time. It lives in the details, in the small adjustments that make a job go right, and in the willingness to help a peer figure it out. It is built by locksmiths who stay curious, continue learning, and show up for each other.
That is what we are celebrating today.
Forged in the Fires of Necessity
The story of HPC begins long before our formal incorporation, grounded in a deep understanding of the locksmith trade.
Before we became a manufacturing cornerstone, the vision started in a humble locksmith shop in Chicago. Harold Hoffman ran this thriving local business before World War II. He knew the tools, the trade, and the trials that locksmiths faced daily. When the war broke out, his dedicated staff was drafted into service. Almost overnight, his bustling shop faced a severe staff shortage.
Did Hoffman fold under the pressure? No. He forged a new path. Forced to reinvent his livelihood, he pivoted from turning keys to distributing supplies. He sourced the best materials he could find to support other security professionals.
When the war ended, Harold’s two sons returned home from their military service. They rolled up their sleeves and joined their father in the distribution business. As their distribution network grew, Harold’s deep love for invention took over. He saw the daily frustrations locksmiths faced and knew exactly what they needed to work faster and smarter. He began manufacturing his own products.
The manufacturing side gained such incredible strength that a separate business was born. In 1956, HPC was officially incorporated as a dedicated designer and manufacturer of revolutionary tools.
First in the Field: A Legacy of Innovation
From the very beginning, our focus was on developing tools that brought greater accuracy and consistency to the bench. HPC has always prided itself on producing industry-revolutionizing products.
We do not just follow trends; we set them. Our history is highlighted by a legendary list of "firsts." We were the first company to mass-produce picks, putting essential tools into the hands of professionals everywhere. We engineered the first In-the-Door car-opening tools and the first Under & Over Style car openers.
As technology advanced, so did we. HPC launched the first computerized code machine, introduced the first touch-screen key machine, and developed the first dedicated software for the locksmithing industry. These early advancements helped standardize processes that locksmiths still rely on today.
Tools That Stand the Test of Time
At a time when much of the work depended heavily on manual processes and individual interpretation, our tools introduced a level of repeatability that changed how work could be performed. They allowed locksmiths to move with greater efficiency while maintaining precision, even as systems became more complex.
As HPC grew, that commitment to practical innovation remained steady. Enduring products became fixtures in shops across the industry. Tools like the Blitz (1200CM) and The Punch Machine Clutch Tools are valued not only for what they can do, but for how reliably they do it. Devices like the Stamp Aligner and the Pocket Sized Decoder continue to be trusted companions on workbenches everywhere.
They are not just part of the past. They are still part of the work, relied on every day in environments where precision cannot fail. These were not simply products introduced to the market; they became integrated into the way locksmiths approach their craft.
Managing Complexity in the Real World
While the tools have evolved, so has the environment in which locksmiths operate. Systems have grown more complex. Expectations have increased. The margin for error has narrowed. Yet, the role of the locksmith has only become more critical.
From duplicating a key to managing large-scale systems, Locksmiths ensure that security works in the real world. This is especially true in institutional environments, where the responsibility extends beyond the individual task. In these settings, locksmiths are managing systems that span buildings, departments, and users.
Whether it is a university campus, a hospital system, a government facility, or a commercial environment, each presents its own complexity. A miscut key or a breakdown in process does not stay isolated. It has the potential to affect an entire operation. This is why precision and repeatability matter.
For decades, HPC tools have supported this level of responsibility. Deliver accuracy. Deliver repeatability. Deliver confidence in the result.
Core Values for the Future
As part of this milestone, we are formally reinforcing a set of core values that will guide how we operate moving forward. In a trade where precision, accountability, and trust are part of the daily work, these values take on real meaning.
- Customer Focused: We stay close to the Locksmith and the realities of the work. We build solutions that reflect how the work is actually done.
- Quality and Reliability: Precision, repeatability, and dependability are what build trust over time. A tool must perform consistently every single time.
- Innovation: We solve real problems. Innovation supports the work without getting in the way of it.
- Integrity: We stand behind our products, follow through on commitments, and do the right thing even when it is hard.
- Resilience: We adapt to changes, learn from them, and move forward with purpose to support the locksmith through every evolution.
This moment is not about standing still. It is about building what comes next. Continuing to improve the tools that support the trade, strengthening the connections that sustain it, and deepening the understanding of the challenges locksmiths face every day.
The future of this industry will not be defined by technology alone. It will be defined by the locksmith. We are proud to be part of that legacy.
Forging our future. Together.
