Gene Babb

President, Babb Security Systems, St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada

Nomination from Lorne Babb: Babb stands out — and to be clear, not quietly. He genuinely loves what he does, and if you get him started on cameras, access control, or anything electronics, you may want to grab a coffee and get comfortable. Growing up in the security business, Gene learned early on that doing the job right the first time matters. Until his involvement with the company back in early 90s, we only sold a modest number of camera systems each year and were just starting to install card access systems. He eventually took over the role as head of the electronics division and decided to make that grow.

After attending a major security trade show, he identified a premium camera system which aligned with his vision. Although the higher cost made it a difficult product to sell initially, Gene was not deterred. Instead of sticking with traditional selling methods, he decided to take a fresh approach. He offered to supply and install this system to a few select high-profile businesses at no cost and give free training as well with one condition only;  if the client was not completely satisfied after a couple of months, he would remove the system free of charge — no questions asked. They would only pay if they decided to keep the product. This not only eliminated risk for the customer but also demonstrated his complete confidence in the product and the company's commitment.

The results were immediate. Clients were impressed. They loved it. What began as a risk, became a turning point in the company. Since then, he has sold and installed hundreds of cameras and systems, not only in Newfoundland but right across Canada. Gene has managed to stay ahead of the technological advances in the security trade and still get the job done right the first time.

The growth in the electronics side of the business has been significant. Best of all, customers appreciate his expertise. Being nominated by his father, who has run this company for 50 years, and is not easily impressed, may be the best compliment of all.

Jon Bottoms

Bilco Lock & Safe, Dallas, Texas

Nomination from Stephanie Ewen: Jon Bottoms exemplifies the very best of the locksmith profession — skill, dedication, and a relentless commitment to mastering the craft. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Jon has built a reputation not only as a trusted professional, but as one of the most highly skilled technicians in the field today.

What sets Bottoms apart is his rare and refined expertise in traditional locksmithing techniques that few still possess. He is one of the select few locksmiths capable of impressioning a Best key by hand — an advanced skill that requires precision, patience, and an in-depth understanding of lock mechanics. Beyond his work with high-security key systems, Jon is widely recognized as an elite safe technician. His ability to open safes, ranging from legacy mechanical units to modern high-security models, places him among a very small group of professionals who can confidently and competently handle virtually any safe presented to them. His work is not just about access; it is about doing so with care, efficiency, and respect for the integrity of the safe and its contents.

Bottoms’ reputation extends far beyond his immediate market. He is known among peers as the locksmith other locksmiths call when faced with their most challenging jobs. His willingness to share knowledge, offer guidance, and support others in the trade speaks to his character and his commitment to strengthening the industry as a whole.
Throughout his career, Jon has remained grounded in the core values that define great tradesmen — integrity, reliability, and craftsmanship. He approaches every job with professionalism and a problem-solving mindset that inspires confidence in both customers and colleagues alike.

Merissa Mahoney

Discount Lock & Key, Bradenton, Florida

My journey in locksmithing has been driven by both hands-on experience and a passion for modernizing and expanding the industry’s role in today’s world. Over the past three years working in my family’s business, Discount Lock & Key, I have developed experience across residential, commercial, and automotive locksmith services, including lock repairs, rekeying, advanced key cutting, and vehicle key and remote programming. Working in the field has taught me the importance of precision, professionalism, adaptability, and problem-solving under pressure.

I have taken initiative in improving and modernizing our business. I’ve worked to organize and optimize our shop layout, streamline workflow, and create a more efficient and professional environment. I’ve also focused on branding and customer experience, helping shape a clean, cohesive image that builds trust and reflects the quality of our work.

Beyond technical work, I have focused heavily on growth, organization, customer experience, and helping strengthen the business for the future. I believe the locksmith industry is evolving rapidly alongside technology, and I am committed to continuing my education through advanced training, certifications, and staying current with modern security systems and automotive advancements. As a young woman in the industry, I strive to combine technical skill with innovation, professionalism, and long-term vision.

In addition to locksmithing, I also serve as senior manager of Prime Key Luxury Stays, a luxury short-term rental management company that reflects what I believe is an important future opportunity for the locksmith industry: stronger integration with real estate, hospitality, and property management. My locksmith background provides a unique advantage in understanding property security, guest safety, lock hardware, smart lock systems, emergency access solutions, and operational efficiency for property owners. I believe locksmiths bring tremendous value to the real estate and hospitality industries beyond traditional lock and key services. As short-term rentals and smart-property technology continue to grow, locksmith professionals are uniquely positioned to help property owners improve security, streamline guest access, reduce liability, and create safer, more efficient experiences for both owners and guests.

This crossover between locksmithing and property management represents an exciting direction for the industry’s future. Through both businesses, my goal is to continue building trust, professionalism, innovation, and strong customer relationships while helping showcase the evolving possibilities within the locksmith profession.

From Curt Mahoney: Merissa is one of the most driven and forward-thinking professionals I have had the privilege of working with, and her impact on our business has been undeniable. She brings a rare combination of technical precision, problem-solving ability, and creative vision that has improved our efficiency, strengthened our customer experience, and modernized our overall brand. Merissa consistently takes initiative. Whether it’s implementing better systems, refining processes, or staying ahead of new technology—she is always pushing the business forward. What truly sets her apart is her leadership and presence in an industry that has traditionally lacked diversity; she represents a new standard of professionalism, confidence, and innovation. Her work ethic, consistency, and pride in her craft are unmatched, and she approaches every challenge with determination and accountability. She represents the future of this industry.

Jonathan Roberge

Micorp Custom Auto and Truck, Chelmsford, Massachusetts

Nomination from Cory Lacouture: I am thrilled to nominate Jonathan Roberge for the All-Star Award. Over the past 5 years, Roberge hasn’t just met expectations; he’s completely redefined them. Specifically, his work on starting the locksmith division at Micorp Custom Auto and Truck was instrumental in adding a whole new segment to our existing business. He consistently takes initiative on tasks that fall outside his immediate scope, ensuring the entire team succeeds rather than just focusing on his own checklist. His dedication makes him a true MVP.

Jacob Turnbow

University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas

Nomination from David DeOre: I would like to nominate Jacob Turnbow for recognition as a Locksmith Ledger All-Star based on his outstanding performance, leadership, and commitment to operate within a complex healthcare and high-security environment.

Turnbow  serves as the lead locksmith, out of two locksmiths, for the entire University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) enterprise. The enterprise supports a community of more than 3,000 students and approximately 13,000 employees. UTMB spans over multiple campuses in the Galveston and Houston Texas metroplex. This encompasses four major campuses, seven hospitals, and more than 45 facilities totaling over 2 million square feet of highly regulated clinical, academic, research, and high-containment laboratories. Additionally, Turnbow  has oversight of a maximum-security prison hospital, and numerous outpatient clinics. In this role, he is responsible for ensuring consistent key control standards and supporting critical infrastructure.

In 2025, Turnbow successfully completed over 350 work orders, consisting of re-core and key cutting service requests across the enterprise, including multiple hospitals and off-site clinics. This volume reflects not only his technical proficiency but also his ability to support a geographically distributed organization while maintaining consistency, accuracy, and timely service delivery. He consistently achieves near-perfect service level agreement performance, maintaining close to 100% compliance month over month.

In 2025, he took the initiative to improve long-term accountability by implementing an enterprise-wide core audit system. He led a team to conduct a comprehensive core audit at a maximum-security prison hospital, ensuring strict compliance with security protocols.

Turnbow is highly collaborative, regularly working with directors and department managers across the organization to coordinate access needs, plan projects, and ensure minimal disruption to operations. His professionalism and communication skills have made him a trusted partner across multiple departments.

Turnbow has also made a significant impact in training and process standardization. This year he developed training materials for the Key Control Officer program and regularly trains new key control officers on systems and processes for requesting badge access, re-cores, and new keys.  Additionally, he continues to mentor and train our new locksmith and staff, helping to build the next generation of skilled professionals within our team. His efforts have improved consistency, reduced errors, and strengthened overall compliance with key control policies across the organization. A recent example of his leadership was successfully leading a re-core project for the Ronald McDonald House near our campus, ensuring the work was completed efficiently and with sensitivity to the mission of the organization.
