Medeco Celebrates 50 Years

Congratulations to Medeco, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in late 2018. The following Medeco history, titled From a Single Mechanical Cylinder to Comprehensive Loss, Liability and Security Solutions, was published by Medeco as part of the anniversary celebration.

It all began with a clever idea. In the 1950’s, Roy Spain, an engineer in rural Salem, Virginia, opened a machine shop business named Mechanical Development Company. Spain invented a lock with a key that had unique angled cuts, making it extremely difficult to pick open. Unfortunately, it would be another 10 years before the marketplace was ready for a security lock. In 1967, Spain and his partners applied for a utility patent and named their new lock company “Medeco,” an abbreviated version of their original name.

Medeco's first distributor was in New York City, where pick-resistant locks were a dream come true. Medeco had discovered its niche market—selling wholesale to locksmiths. Over the next half-century, Medeco Security Locks would become world renowned for their retrofit mechanical locks and for their expansion into retrofit intelligent key systems.

In 1998, Medeco was acquired by ASSA ABLOY in Sweden. ASSA ABLOY is the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of locking solutions with about 47,500 employees, operations in more than 70 countries and annual sales of $8.5 billion.

Today, Medeco locks are still manufactured in Salem, Virginia with precision handcrafted, solid brass construction. Medeco takes pride in producing high quality products that are made in America, and we use recycled and regional materials. We continually strive to provide our customers with sustainable building solutions while minimizing our environmental impact.

Medeco's mechanical locks remain famous for their resistance to picking, bumping, and physical attack. Users are also safeguarded from unauthorized key duplication thanks to utility patents on Medeco's locking technology and innovative designs.

Medeco has also led the market with development of very sophisticated intelligent key platforms. Medeco CLIQ and Medeco XT add scheduling and audit capability on top of the robust physical security in a mechanical cylinder, providing smart new solutions for a world in need of more effective and efficient security systems.

Medeco is proud to have led the security industry in innovation and quality for more than 50 years. From a single mechanical cylinder to comprehensive loss, liability and security solutions, Medeco is the market leader for security and safety.

Medeco Today has 260+ employees; Worldwide distribution in 62+ countries; 132,000 square foot manufacturing facility; Uses over one million pounds of brass per year; Number of SKUs = 1M+.

HID Crescendo Mobile Smart Card

AUSTIN, Texas,– HID Global®’s Crescendo® Mobile smart card brings convenience to high security for accessing computer, network or cloud applications.  The new HID mobile smart card utilizes digital certificates on users’ mobile devices for client authentication.

The HID Crescendo Mobile solution provides organizations seeking to eliminate passwords with a solution that combines the high security of physical authenticators with the usability of a mobile solution. Crescendo Mobile works similarly to, and is compatible with, highly secure Crescendo smart cards; however, rather than inserting a separate device into a contact smart card reader, it connects to a desktop computer via an NFC (near-field communication) reader or Bluetooth.

“End users and IT personnel alike have been clamoring for a highly secure solution for enabling secure access to networked assets that can utilize what people are already carrying, namely their mobile devices,” said Brad Jarvis, Vice President & Managing Director, IAM Solutions, with HID Global.  “A key to ensuring security protocols are followed is to ensure that they are as easy to use as possible. The ubiquity of mobile phones, tablets and the like make them an obvious choice to become part of the security system.”

Just as convenience is added to the user experience, the deployment of HID Crescendo Mobile is simple. The Crescendo Mobile app can be downloaded onto Android or iOS devices and the IT team can distribute secure cryptographic credentials to users without the need or expense of shipping smart cards or smart card readers. The solution is particularly cost-effective to deploy for contractors and remote users.

Day-to-day usage scenarios for HID Crescendo Mobile include:

  • Allowing a user to log on and unlock a Windows workstation to access cloud applications, VPNs, desktop applications and Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Importantly, when the user walks away, Crescendo Mobile App automatically locks the workstation down.
  • End users can use their phone to carry the keys and digital certificates needed to digitally sign email, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat documents.
  • Ensure sensitive data confidentiality by requiring the phone to access encrypted email messages or files using Windows EFS file encryption.

The Crescendo Mobile app is available for Android 7 or later in Google Play and for iOS 11 or later in iTunes App Store. Crescendo Mobile is part of HID’s authentication solution that includes ActivID® Credential Management System, providing full lifecycle management of both the authenticators and the credentials protected by the authenticator.
