Keys for Antique Locks

Editor:

I had a customer bring these two antique looking locks (see photo) into our shop and was wondering if you or any one you know might be able to help me find the correct keys for them. Thanks.

Your lock uses a “barrel” key. An Ilco key blank such as 21B, 22BB  or 23B can be used to make the key. Measure the post diameter in your lock and then check the Ilco key blank book for a blank with a similar hole diameter.  The key must be cut down to fit into the keyway. If you do not have a machine for cutting drill keys then the blank and side ward can be hand filed to fit.

There are no lever tumblers in your lock. Once the key fits into the lock housing, it should operate the bolt without further fitting. Barrel key locks were popular before 1940 so obtaining a pre-cut key for your lock today is not a possibility.
