ASSA ABLOY Looks to Future
The ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions team doesn’t settle for the way things work now, choosing instead to dream about the way things will work in the future. That’s why ASSA ABLOY engineers and innovators develop solutions today that focus on technologies to better protect the places in which you live, work, study and play.
In addition to innovating across all product lines, utilizing technology to help support the specification and installation of those products is also a focus. ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions is showcasing three platforms that use technology to advantage.
The BILT Application - for Apple and Android devices - provides access to fully interactive installation instructions. The voice narrated, step-by-step guides direct the installer to ensure a trouble-free and efficient installation. That means the app is helpful for one time installs, or can offer training for an installer before they head into the field.
“The key benefits to the BILT Application are that it greatly enhances understanding of the product and installation while also reducing the amount of time it takes to install a product,” said Jeffery Granath, Operational Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY Americas. “It really goes the next step to make sure you are installing it correctly. The app shows you exactly how this is going to look before you begin. And it allows you to rotate the assembly and zoom in on any component you want to.”
Further, the app allows seamless updates if a product changes or install instructions are updated. The result is the most clear and up to date install instructions possible.
The app may even one day utilize Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies being developed by the ASSA ABLOY team.
Augmented Reality (AR) technology is demonstrated with a wearable that provides a holographic overlay onto the physical world around you. By using a headset, you can work in a real space as you virtually view the installation of products onto an actual opening. The AR technology also double checks your work after the virtual install, and takes you through additional steps, such as wiring.
“When you experience the Augmented Reality technology you’ll be able to see not just what we can do now, but how this might be applied in the future as wearables get smaller,” Granath said. “Think big picture. What if you were able to go to an existing job site and were able to superimpose any door onto an opening? And what if it auto measured the opening, and selected the doors that work? And then at the end, after selecting every opening by seeing how it will looking in real time, the system sent you a shopping list of what you’d chosen? It’s absolutely incredible where we can take this technology.”
A further step for AR technology would be to integrate it into ASSA ABLOY Openings Studio™, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) software from Door Security Solutions.
ASSA ABLOY Openings Studio is a suite of BIM software tools for creating and visualizing 3D doors, frames, and hardware objects used in design, construction, and facility management. By integrating with industry standard Revit 3D software, Openings Studio allows you to plan, review and track the design of your openings throughout the planning process and avoid miscommunication and the potential for costly change orders.

ASSA ABLOY announces the integration of their IP-enabled PoE (Power over Ethernet) and WiFi access control locks with Millennium Group’s Ultra browser-based access control platform.
The integration with Millennium Ultra offers integrators even greater flexibility to provide comprehensive security management tailored to the specific needs of a facility.
