5.4% Annual Sales Growth?

Sales of mechanical security products in the US are expected to rise 5.4 percent annually through 2020 to $6.1 billion.  Growth will be driven by the large lock segment, which will benefit from continued gains in building construction spending.  Advances in value terms will be aided by the ongoing shift to higher value electrified products, particularly door locks and door security hardware, which are used with electronic access control systems.  These and other trends are presented in Mechanical Security Products, a new study from Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

In 2015, locks accounted for more than 70 percent of mechanical security product sales.  Sales of door locks dominate this segment and alone accounted for 60 percent of total mechanical security demand in 2015.  Door locks are also expected to see the fastest growth of any mechanical security product, increasing 6.9 percent per year through 2020.  Gains will be driven by rising demand for doors in both new construction and repair and renovations and further supported by routine replacement and upgrade sales.  "Electromechanical door locks will continue to generate double-digit annual gains, rising to account for 17 percent of all door lock sales," notes analyst Katherine Brink.

Sales of door security hardware, including panic hardware and exit devices, represented 10 percent of mechanical security sales in 2015.  As with locks, this segment will generate above average sales gains, rising 5.7 percent per year to nearly $600 million in 2020.  Sales of these products will benefit from the strong demand for doors, as well as the increasing use of access control systems and related, more expensive, electrified door security hardware.

Security storage equipment, such as safes and vaults, was the second largest segment in 2015 with 14 percent of sales.  This segment will see slower gains going forward.  The primary market for many security storage products is the financial sector, and sales will be restrained by the declining number of banking and credit union offices.  Demand for vaults will be particularly limited, as replacement sales are rare; however, some opportunities exist in new installations in other smaller applications, such as the quickly growing marijuana industry.  Safes are expected to post better growth, as they benefit both from a wider pool of potential customers and rising interest in gun safes.

Crazy Restroom Door Hardware

Who puts a push-to-exit button on the interior side of a public restroom door? Wouldn’t this be the last place you’d want to require folks to touch with newly washed hands? Well, that would be our national government at work.

This photo shows the green REX button, keyed  lock cylinder with cover and a bent door lever , all on the inside of a restroom at a National Park Service facility. The REX button is not connected to anything at all. And this is a relatively recent job; the entire park building was built just a few years ago. We assume that general contractors – clearly not locksmiths – installed the door hardware.

Job Description

What Does a Professional Locksmith/Security Professional Do?

"A professional trained locksmith/security professional may do some or all of the following: install locks, deadbolts and other mechanical or electronic locking devices to safeguard homes, businesses, vehicles and other property. Locksmiths also may modify or repair such devices, rekey locks, make duplicate keys or cards, generate or program new keys/cards for locks whose keys/cards have been lost and respond to emergency calls to unlock vehicles, homes and businesses that have been locked accidentally, or whose locks have malfunctioned.

Some locksmiths install and service electronic alarm and surveillance systems. Many locksmiths specify, design, provide, install and service a wide range of electronic access control systems and closed circuit television (CCTV) systems. Because of the integration of electronic security systems with computers and networks, some locksmiths maintain security hardware and software for computer systems.

When new or replacement locks are required, a locksmith assists the customer in determining the correct types of locks needed based on the security risk/exposure, life safety application and frequency of use. The locksmith installs locks and security devices using manufacturer's templates and/or industry specifications, by cutting or drilling the proper opening in the selected location with small hand and power tools."

Locks of Love?

Are locks of love (padlocks permanently locked on bridges in honor of a couple’s love) still a thing? We’ve seen stories about the padlocks being removed from some bridges because of the excess weight. We recently spotted just a few locks on a pedestrian bridge, but no text or engravings to tell whose love they represent.

'Maserati Of SUVs'

Following the success of its global reveal in Geneva earlier this month, the all new Maserati Levante SUV made its official U.S. debut at the New York Auto Show on March 23rd. The U.S. market launch is planned for late summer 2016 with a starting price of $72,000 for the 345 hp (Levante) and $83,000 for the 424 hp (Levante S) model (not including destination and delivery), now available for order in the U.S. this April.

It is distinguished by a sleek and sculpted exterior, typical of Maserati, thoroughbred on-road handling and solid off-road capabilities. Levante boasts state of the art vehicle dynamics, built on the Ghibli architecture, which was refined to meet the expectations of the premium SUV segment, in which Maserati will now compete for the first time.

The standard power tailgate opens and closes automatically without anyone having to physically lift it up or pull it down. The system has a special anti-pitching function that immediately stops the closing procedure when an obstacle is detected. The power tailgate system can be activated by the buttons on the tailgate, by the car's key fob and by a button on the dome light panel.

Standard equipment includes: leather upholstery (upgraded for the 424 hp); Maserati 8.4-inch Touch Screen with Navigation; Base Audio System with 8 speakers; cruise control; Hill Descent Control; dual-zone climate system; wipers with rain sensor; keyless entry (all doors); and keyless start and electro-chromatic interior and exterior mirrors.   Another standard feature is the easy entry & exit system that facilitates the driver's movements by automatically retracting the seat backwards and the steering column upwards. This is standard along with the electrical adjustable steering wheel.  HomeLink® is a standard remote-control device integrated in the dome lighting unit in the ceiling above the dashboard. It can automatically operate garage doors, gates, or security lighting systems as the car approaches. HomeLink® can be programmed to operate up to three automatic systems, which is ideal for customers with more than one property.

When using the Engrave-It™ line of products two files are required for every job. The “.CDL” file and the “.INI” file. Both files are required and stored in the “Kaba Jobs” folder. The “.CDL” file is the drawing file we open for the job. The .CDL file includes a picture or sketch of the part and sample text. The sample text is edited to create the actual engraving for the job. The “.INI” file is the information file (layout) the software uses to engrave multiple parts correctly in the corresponding fixture. When we open a job (.CDL file) in Vision Pro, if a matching .INI file exists, it is automatically loaded into the multiples set-up. When you create a new .CDL file, you must also create a new .INI file. The names of these two files must match exactly! For example, if you create a new drawing file called KH14-2 LINES.CDL there must be a KH14-2 LINES.INI file also.

The new ADC243 Cable allows you to connect your AD Pro Testers with your Ilco EZ®-Clone Plus or RW4 Plus cloning devices in order to precode Fiat® transponders. For more details, download the PDF:
