This newsletter is usually dedicated to opinions regarding happenings in the security field. My opinions have no more importance than the opinions of each person who reads this newsletter, so instead of writing my opinions this month I would like to hear opinions from each of you.

While locksmiths are still involved with physical security in one form or another, security products of today have vastly changed from products available a few decades ago. One of the best examples of change is in the automotive field. Very few new car models have key-operated locks and the majority of the remaining keys being used are laser keys. Key clippers have become relics of the past as the public now depends instead on multi-function remotes.

Latest phenomenons include self-changing SmartKey locks by Kwikset, electronic residential pushbutton locks, locks operated with cell phones and home automation products.  Businesses are asking for audit trails and time zone locking or unlocking, things which mechanical locks cannot offer.

Amid all of these changes Locksmith Ledger would like to know how your business has been affected and what new products or services you now offer to meet the challenges of today. A Security Product Survey was sent by E-mail in the last few days. There are only a few parts to the survey which asks what mechanical product, electronic product or new tool you have found helpful during the last year. In addition, we are asking if you have added any new procedures such as installing cameras, alarms, access control or programming automotive remotes.  We are looking for specific manufacturer product names which will be featured in the December issue of Locksmith Ledger.

Kindly take a moment and E-mail your list to Locksmith Ledger. If you did not receive a survey by E-mail then send one or two product names to my E-mail address and your product choices will be added to the list.  Send to: [email protected] or click here to vote online.
