Car Opening Techniques: 2003-14 Volvo XC90
This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturer's recommended techniques for opening the 2003-14 Volvo XC90. These four-door luxury SUVs are equipped with a vertical locking button in the rear door.
CAUTION: These vehicles are equipped with multilayer weather stripping that fits very tightly. Forcing a wedge or car-opening tool into the opening can result in tearing the weather stripping. A thin piece of plastic or a plastic putty knife can be carefully used to enlarge the opening. Using a small amount of diluted dish detergent can help.
Be very careful when you contact the lock buttons. Too much force can result in scratching or marring the button.
The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2003-14 Volvo XC90:
Use the High Tech Double Bend 88 car-opening tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge between the window glass and the weather stripping along the front edge of the outside door handle. Insert the Double Bend 88 car-opening tool with the 20-degree bend tip facing forward into the front passenger door. Once the tool is partially into the door cavity, tilt the tool so the shank is parallel to the window frame. Continue to lower the tool until it is beneath the outside door handle. Rotate the tip of the tool until the tip is beneath the vertical linkage rod. Carefully lift the car-opening tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.
Use the Slide Lock Mercedes Strip™ and a slim wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the slim wedge above the midline of the rear edge of the front passenger door window frame. Insert the knotted end of the Mercedes Strip between the wedge and the base of the window into the passenger compartment. Use the string to guide the tip towards the vertical lock button. Capture the lock button between the tip and the string. Slowly and carefully, pull up on the tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.
Use the Steck Manufacturing BigEasy “Glo” with the BigEasy Loop and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting a wedge or inflatable wedge into the top corner of the door. Once the door has been wedged out, insert the BigEasy tool with the Loop attachment into the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool to position the loop over the vertical locking button. Bind the locking button. Carefully lift the car opening tool to unlock the locking mechanism. Pull on the outside door handle and open the door.
Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1022 car-opening tool and two wedges to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism, which is located near the back of the door. Insert a wedge five inches forward of the rear door main window track. Carefully insert the long straight end (Cadillac) of the TT-1022 car-opening tool into the opening created by the wedge with the tip towards the rear of the vehicle. As the tool is lowered guide it towards the base of the vertical locking button linkage, positioning the TT-1022 on the inboard side of the window track. As the car-opening tool contact the vertical linkage, the locking button will move. Lower the tool until it is beneath the bell crank. Pull up on the car opening tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.
The direction to rotate the 2003-14 Volvo XC90 driver's door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
