Programming Guide: Standalone Electronic Locks

Standalone, single-door locks have evolved from single-code keypads to the electronic electromechanical devices available today.

Mechanical keys served as the earliest credential. These transitioned to keypad locks which had keyways, but also a mechanical keypad which was programmed with a single code. This type of lock is still in widespread use because they fulfill a requirement at an acceptable price point.

Mechanical keypads have evolved to devices which use keypads, proximity and smart credentials, and smart cards to control access.

When you are servicing standalones, you may have to perform programming. The majority of service issues with standalones involves mechanical and hardware failures and loss of battery power. Even if the initial service issue is caused by one of the above causes, you will probably have to at least partially dismantle the device to adjust components, repair components, or replace batteries. Then you may have to re-commission (re-program) the lock.

Your service call may be to remove a user, add a user, or change the main access code.

Our product showcase presents a selection of standalone products, explaining their features and benefits. On our website we present a collection of programming and product manuals for a wide assortment of standalones. Check out this new resource center at www.locksmithledger.com/12147489.

Some are products have been discontinued and are no longer sold, but you may encounter in your travels. The others are currently offered through professional locksmith distribution or through home centers.

These days, locksmiths generally do not turn down a service call if it involves a product they did not themselves install. As a matter of fact, market surveys reveal that unsuccessful DIYers are a growing market as they realize they have attempted to install and program a variety of security related products, and have bitten off more than they can chew. The phenomemon applies to mechanical and electronic locks, security systems and video surveillance products.

Our online guide addresses standalone locks, and will hopefully provide you with an easily accessible resource to obtain the product specs and programming steps you’ll need.

Codelocks KitLock 1550 SMART

Codelocks’ new  KitLock 1550 SMART cam lock combines keypad and smart card access with the ability to set access codes from a remote location and manage through NFC-enabled tablet. It makes it faster and easier for operators to manage and control access to large numbers of lockers, cabinets or enclosures.

Based on its popular 1500 cam lock, the new KitLock 1550 SMART is a multi-purpose, multi-functional electronic digital lock with the ability to support many different forms of access.

As well as being used in its most basic form, i.e. programmed via the keypad and accessed using a four-digit code, the KL1550 SMART supports Private* and Public Use*, MIFARE-based smart cards and NetCode.

Using an NFC-enabled hand-held device (purchased separately), operators can upload selective programs and features, and download audit trail data on demand in a matter of seconds.

The KL1550 has four code levels available:

  1. 8-digit Master Code
  2. 8--digit Sub-Master Code
  3. 4-digit User Code
  4. 6-digit Technician Code

“Technology has enabled us to offer several access options in one product; via the keypad, smart card or iButton. It has also allowed us to cut down the time it takes to program and manage access permissions,” explains Grant Macdonald, President, Codelocks Inc. “Customers need flexibility and this lock, with the addition of smart cards and NetCode, is able to offer just that. Using the web-based NetCode portal, customers can issue time-sensitive access codes for temporary or one-off purposes via SMS or email.

“The functionality of the lock allows for many possible scenarios. For example, set Public Function* for short-term multiple occupancy applications and open the lock with either a code on the keypad or with a smart card. Issue NetCodes via SMS for one-time entry – this function is useful for service engineers when visiting remote cabinet enclosures. Issue up to 50 smart cards for access to storage used regularly by a small group of people, for example nurses accessing a medical cart in a hospital.”

Kaba PowerPlex 2000

PowerPlex 2000 is a self-powered, eco-friendly electronic lock that does not require batteries or other external power sources. PowerPlex offers an access control solution that helps meet sustainability initiatives by removing battery waste disposal. The lock generates its own power with every turn of the lever. Employing PowerStar™ technology, PowerPlex uses new super capacitor technology to store power longer and more efficiently.

Providing exterior access by PIN code while allowing free egress, PowerPlex is as reliable as a mechanical lock with the features of an electronic lock. The lock supports 100 user codes and records the last 1,000 events for increased accountability. Lock audits provide information, such as date, time, transaction description, user number, user access code/name, and user status.

PowerPlex is ideal for high security and restricted areas, such as IT, records or cash rooms. The lock also provides a unique feature: privacy. Once an access code is entered and access is granted into a room, the privacy latch can be thrown. This feature allows the room to be secured from the inside, and it does not allow other authorized users entrance into the room.

PowerPlex is BHMA Grade 1 Certified, making it a perfect choice for outdoor and remote locations. Its sealed unit and durable finish can withstand a broad range of climates. Additionally, as PowerPlex requires no batteries, the lock needs little to no service. PowerPlex holds a full charge for up to 10 weeks with no activity at the lock. And, if the lock is unused for long periods of time, a simple pump of the handle is all that is required to charge the unit.

Features include:

  • Electronic pushbutton lock (PIN only)
  • Self powered: charge lasts for up to 10 weeks
  • Simple installation — no wires to pinch or cut
  • 100 access codes — 1,000 audit events, including the use of mechanical key override
  • Locking device options: cylindrical, mortise, and exit trim
  • Key override options
  • Non-handed, pre-assembled for left-hand door installations, easily changed in the field
  • Multiple user parameters: code length, anti-tamper lockout, and re-lock time
  • ANSI/BMHA Grade 1 Certified and ADA Compliant
  • Fire rating: UL 10C fire rated – Environmental: -31 ºF to +130 ºF
  • Three-year warranty

PowerPlex offers a simple upgrade path to electronic access control. The locks are easy to install. There are no wires. And, because these locks are standalone devices they can be replaced over time and as needed.

With an electronic lock, you gain additional features, such as audit trail, multiple user codes, and several authority levels, which helps increase security measures. PowerPlex lets you consolidate the functionality of both a mechanical and electronic lock into one lock. In addition, the E-Plex 2000 Series offers the same features as the PowerPlex 2000 Series, but requires batteries to power the unit.

PowerPlex provides the same exterior access with free egress as a conventional key locking system. However, pushbutton access control eliminates the costs associated with lost keys, key distribution, key management, and re-keying.

PowerPlex audit capabilities allow you to meet internal and external policies, such as HIPPA, for high-security areas, including

records room, hazardous waste storage, and IT room. With Kaba’s Excel®-based Standard Software (available via free download),

you can view the most recent 1,000 events, including the use of the mechanical key override.

Schlage NDE

Schlage’s NDE lock with ENGAGE technology opens the door to a new level  of intelligence with visibility and control and transition from mechanical keys  to electronic credentials with technology that’s easy to install, easy to manage and easy to use.

Schlage® NDE series wireless locks with ENGAGE technology are designed to fit into a standard cylindrical door prep, making it easy to upgrade  without having to replace the door or modify the frame. Installation is  complete in minutes using just a Phillips screwdriver, with no additional holes  to drill or wires to run to the opening.

The NDE is the first from Schlage to feature a built-in door position sensor  on the lock and strike plate, eliminating the time and cost to install and wire separate components. And since lever handing can be changed in the field in a matter of seconds, you can easily accommodate a left- or right-handed door.

NDE series wireless locks are powered by four AA batteries with a battery life of up to two years under normal usage.

NDE series wireless locks meet the highest industry standards for  reliability and durability, including ANSI/BHMA A 156.25, ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, UL 294, UL10C, Industry Canada and FCC Part 15. They also meet ADA, RoHS, and LEED certifications

For basic standalone applications, the ENGAGE apps are used to manage  locks, add and delete credentials and view lock history from anywhere. For applications where more advanced capabilities are required, the ENGAGE mobile app is used to configure and connect the locks to an access control alliance partner system.

Building IDs and NFC-enabled smart phone devices are common electronic credentials that work with ENGAGE technology.

Both proximity and smart credentials are held up to an electronic reader to initiate the validation process and gain access. For basic access control applications, either type of credential works. Note, however, that smart card technology is rapidly growing in popularity.

The ENGAGE™ Gateway is designed to be used with devices that feature ENGAGE™ technology, including Schlage® NDE Series Wireless locks, to deliver real-time networked connectivity with NDE Alliance Partner systems.

Each ENGAGE Gateway can support up to 5 wireless devices for a wide range of applications including interior suite entries, offices, conference rooms, sensitive storage areas and more.

Regular, frequent communication between the Gateway and linked ENGAGE™ enabled devices—like the NDE Series wireless lock—enable the Gateway to send commands such as lock, unlock and lock down from an ACP or IP host in real-time (commands are executed in < 5 seconds).
