These non-handed overhead stops and holders eliminate the need of floor-mounted door stops/holders that can be a hazard.

The SARGENT 590 Series Surface-Mounted Overhead Stops and Holders are designed to control the degree of opening of a single-acting exterior or interior door. They are ANSI A156.8 Grade 1, and can be installed onto the outside or inside of the door.

The 590 Series Overhead Stops & Holders incorporate an arm and track mechanism to control the angle the door opens. The track, slide, arm, and jamb bracket are manufactured of extruded bronze.

The series is divided into two types: the overhead stop 590S Series and the overhead holder 590H Series. The 590S Series door stops are designed to stop the door from swinging open beyond a specific angle. At that point, the door will begin to close, powered by the door closer. For smooth stopping of the door swing, the 590S Series have a spring in the end of the channel. The 590H Series door holders are designed to stop and hold a door open at a specific angle. They are equipped with a tension adjustment for the slide and a latch mechanism in the track.

For this article, a SARGENT 598S surface-mounted overhead stop was installed onto the exterior side of 33-inch wide electronic wooden door in a large medical facility. The SARGENT 598S was selected to control the degree of opening and eliminate any chance of contacting a large electrical panel on the wall at the end of the swing of the door. To accomplish this, the degree of opening was determined to be 90 degrees.
