For this installation in a senior facility, the ED 800J was installed onto the push side of one door in a double door opening.

The Dorma ED 800 Low Energy Power Operator is designed to provide varying degrees of opening assistance for disabled persons, while also functioning as a standard door closer. The ED 800 is based on the Dorma TS83, an adjustable spring power closer with backcheck, sweep, and latch adjustment valves. A DC motor is incorporated into the unit to open and hold open the door. This Dorma operator is designed for exterior doors up to 3'-6" and interior doors up to 4'-0". The Dorma ED 800 is designed to operate under the parameters of ANSI 156.19, the Standard for Power Assist and Low Energy Power Operated Doors.

The Dorma ED 800 can function as Low Energy or Power Assist door operator. When activated, the Low Energy function (factory default) will open the door to an adjustable position, hold the door open for a preset time and release the door to close by the built-in closer. To have the ED 800 set at low energy function open the door, a switch or sensor must activate the unit. When energized, the door lock mechanism will retract, then a half second later the ED 800 will begin to open the door. If a person opens the door, the ED 800 will not provide opening assistance in the Low Energy mode.

When set to the Low Energy function, the door can be opened to between 85 and 115 degrees and will stay in the hold open position between 5 and 60 seconds. If an obstacle is encountered during opening, the ED 800 will automatically reduce power, holding the door in a balanced state for the adjusted time delay. In this condition, the door can be pushed open or closed. After the time delay, if the obstacle is removed, the door will close under the control of the Dorma TS83 closer.

When set to the Power Assist function, the ED800 provides opening assistance each and every time opening pressure is exerted against the door. When using the Power Assist function, no external switches are required. Once pressure has been exerted against the door, the door will start to open with power assistance. The amount of assistance is adjustable from requiring 1/2 pound to 5 pounds in order to open the door. The opening assistance continues for as long as the unit senses door movement. The door enters hold open when there is no longer movement. After the adjustable time delay, the door will close under the control of the Dorma TS83 closer.
