PDQ Takes An Enlightened Approach To School Lockdown

March 3, 2014
With the press of a button, a red LED indicator light verifies that the PDQ XGT/GT 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Lock is securely locked down.

Classroom security is unique. In addition to having an increased need for security, staff and students must be able to secure the entry doors from within the classroom, and must be able to tell when the door is locked without compromising the safety of the occupants in the room.

To provide solutions, many lock manufacturers have introduced specialized designed specifically for classroom security. The offerings include both mechanical and electromechanical lock hardware. With budgets easing, many schools, colleges and universities have begun a new fiscal year ready to begin or expand the upgrade of their security.

One solution is the patent pending standalone battery-powered PDQ 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Lock.  The ANSI F110 function means the outside lever is locked by key from either side of the door. The inside lever remains free for immediate exit.

The full 360-degree key rotation required to lock the exterior lever can create uncertainty when locking the door in a panic or intense moment. The individual may not know if the outside lever is locked.

PDQ's innovative design allows a person on the interior of the room to positively confirm the outside lever is locked and the door is secure without opening the door to test the lever.  Pressing the indicator button illuminates the red LED, indicating the outside lever is locked.  The LED will not illuminate if the outside lever is not locked.

To prevent tampering with the circuitry or battery, access is limited to those who remove the interior trim.  The circuitry was designed to consume no current unless the LED is illuminated.  PDQ claims battery life, depending on the number of LED illuminations, is equivalent to the battery's shelf life.  Additionally, battery life cycle testing exceeds 7,300 one second LED illuminations.

PDQ 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Locks have the locked/unlocked indicator mechanism built into the LED-equipped mounting plate. The mechanism is mounted onto a stainless steel mounting plate with the button extending. The mechanism is threaded onto the retractor mechanism and located using the thru-bolts. There is a hole in the retractor mechanism into which the button tip will enter when pressed. The mechanism is designed that if the outside lever is unlocked, the tip of the button will contact the spindle shaft and the LED will not illuminate. If the outside lever is locked, the button tip will enter further through the hole in the retractor and will not contact the spindle shaft and the LED will illuminate.

PDQ 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Locks are based on the PDQ Spirit Series cylindrical locks that meet or exceed the ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011, Series 4000, Grade 1 requirements. These cylindrical locks are UL/ULC A label fire rated for up to 3 hours and are UL10C/UBC 7-2 (1997) positive pressure rated, for single doors up to 4’0” x 8’0”. They comply with the ADA and ANSI 117.1 for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities.

According to PDQ, independent testing determined the Spirit Series XGT cylindrical locks are capable of withstanding 3000 in. lbs of applied torque. The Spirit Series GT cylindrical locks are capable of 2100 in. lbs.  The XGT/GT locks have been cycle tested for more than 4 million operations with virtually no lever sag.

Spirit Series XGT and GT lock body components are manufactured of zinc die cast and chromated cold rolled steel. The spindles are manufactured from billet steel. The roses are 3-3/8" diameter. PDQ 135 LED locks are designed to accommodate a door thickness of 1-3/4" thick. The backset is 2-3/4". Door prep is the standard 161 with external thru-bolting.  The PDQ 135 LED requires no additional prep then the standard.  The standard thru-bolt pattern is 12 and 6 o'clock at 2-3/4" center to center using 5/16" diameter holes.

The solid cast levers are a minimum 5-1/2" overall length with two of the levers designs having returns within one-half inch of the door face. The levers supportive spring power is independent of the chassis or latch mechanism. To fully retract the 9/16" throw latch, the levers require only 41-degree rotation.

Lock cylinders for the 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Locks are available with conventional lock cylinder, Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) and Schlage Large Format Interchangeable Core (LFIC). For specific applications, contact PDQ for specifics.

The PDQ 135 LED function is available as an option with the Spirit XGT and GT cylindrical locks.

PDQ XGT 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Locks have a lifetime manufacturer's limited warranty. The PDQ GT 135 LED Classroom Intruder Cylindrical Locks have a 25-year manufacturer's limited warranty. PDQ XGT and GT have a one-year electrical warranty.
