Unsecured Doors

Feb. 24, 2014
Locksmiths should check to be certain doors close and latch.

Security begins with a closed and latched door. Lately I have been seeing a significant number of slightly open doors at malls, airports and office buildings. Some had signage referencing doors must be locked. These doors were in the open where anyone who walks by could easily walk in. Several of the entries had wear marks on the thresholds, doors and floor.

The latest was a pair of doors with continuous hinges, no exterior lock hardware but a sign that said, "These doors must remain closed at all times. For access call Security at". The pair of doors was adjacent to the parking lot. They were in the same open condition when we left after having dinner and shopping. The funny thing was security drove by the doors as we arrived.

When you are walking a job, check each opening to be certain the locking hardware operates properly and the doors close and latch. Notify the end user regarding the condition of the doors and the related hardware that needs service.

As always, I look forward to your thoughts and comments.
