Trimco: An Independent Source for Heavy-Duty Door Hardware

July 1, 2015
Trimco Healthy Hardware™ products are manufactured from specially formulated copper nickel alloys. The new 5200 Series Wrap Plates and Filler Plates are used to reinforce doors around the lock and latch, reducing the need to replace the door.

Trimco is a proud and fiercely independent manufacturer of high performance architectural hardware, more commonly known as flat goods or trim.  Being independent allows Trimco the flexibility to quickly help customers and solve problems without all of the red tape of a large corporation. Trimco’s product support team fields questions and product requests from cell phone pictures, napkin drawings or oral descriptions on a daily basis.

Trimco was founded in 1949 in Los Angeles, Calif. The Simon family purchased the business from the founders in 1985 and began focusing on product differentiation through solutions-based, patented products like the anti-vandal pull and the universal dome stop. In 2014, Trimco brought on two new partners as the succession plan for the business. The new partners, Jason Bennett and Adam Matusz, have extensive industry knowledge and experience.

Matusz says “Our craftsman have an average of 26 years of experience.  They are extremely proud of the quality and heritage at Trimco.  Our team truly cares about our customers.”

Bennett adds: “Our current focus is to refresh and modernize the business, focusing on training and supporting our unbeatable work force while developing new unique products.”

For locksmiths, Trimco is probably best known for its heavy-duty door hardware products, in particular 1/8" thick, type 316 marine grade stainless steel school and anti-vandal products. Some examples include the patented Anti-Vandal Trim, Cylindrical Lock/Latch Guards, push/pull handles and heavy-duty stops. The 1096/1097 Series Anti-Vandal pull handle surface area is larger than a mortise lock body. To mount the anti-vandal pull, welded solid steel threaded studs are through bolted to the interior face of the door, eliminating exterior fasteners.

The 1096/1097 Series was designed to resist forced entry attacks by crowbars or chains and was developed for single and double doors equipped with exit devices, mortise locks or as a standalone handle only. For keyed lock applications, the mortise or rim cylinder face is the only exposed component on the anti-vandal pull. The handle portion has a plasticol coating which can change the ambient temperature of the pull up to 25 degrees permitting safe door operation in extreme weather conditions. Trimco anti-vandal products are available to mate with mortise locks, exit devices and cylindrical locks. They can be ordered with or without latch protection for single- or double-door applications.

Trimco protection plates, finger guards, edge and frame guards, latch protectors, and wrap around protection plates in stainless steel, brass, bronze and plastic provide protection for doors and openings. K Series Protection Plates are manufactured in the United States utilizing non-magnetic 300 Series .050” stainless steel, brass or bronze and are shipped standard with two extra screws and a pencil bevel on all four sides.  These protection plates are available with a UL Listing and are fully customizable with special cutouts, countersunk screws, extra-heavy beveled edges and alternative material thicknesses including 038", .062", .125" to accommodate different applications. For custom applications, contact the factory. The K Series includes mop plates (6" height or under), kick plates (7" to 16" height), armor plates (17" to 48" height) and stretcher plates (those used at different positions on a door). For special applications, an illuminated "EXIT" kick plate conforms to UL924.

Trimco heavy-duty school and anti-vandal hardware includes door stops, door holders, wall bumpers, surface bolts, exit device bottom latchguards, push bars and door coordinators. A multitude of extra heavy-duty push bars are available and manufactured of solid brass, bronze or stainless steel. Trimco also sells standard duty stops, door holders and wall bumpers.

To control double-door operation, Trimco manufactures manual, semi-automatic and automatic flush bolts. To ensure coordinated double-door closings, styles of door coordinators include stop mounted door coordinators, drop arm coordinators and retracting arm coordinators. The UL Listed Retracting Arm Door Coordinator is designed for use on pairs of doors with or without astragal.

To provide better protection for medical facilities, Trimco introduced Healthy HardwareTM products that are manufactured from specially formulated copper nickel alloys.  When cleaned regularly, products with Healthy Hardware touch surfaces have been proven to kill up to 99.9 percent of bacteria, preventing the spread of disease. The solid copper alloys are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Healthy Hardware alloys are not a coating that can scratch or wear off and are available as the base metal component of many of the Trimco products. These include push/pull plates, hospital push/pull latchsets, flush pulls, ADA Pocket Door Pulls and mortise levers and escutcheons. For anti-bacterial protection, Trimco also manufactures easy-to-install exit device snap-on covers for specific manufacturers’ rail style devices, eliminating the need to replace the device to obtain anti-microbial protection.

New products and services are the life's blood of a manufacturer and Trimco has recently introduced their 5200 Series Wrap Plates and 5210 Series Filler Plates. Wrap Plates are manufactured from 22 gauge (.03") stainless steel or steel, offering a choice of 605 Brass, 630 Satin SS or 690 Duranotic Bronze. There are wrap plates for cylindrical and mortise locks in residential and commercial backsets and interior (1-3/8" thick) or exterior (1-3/4" thick). There are single and double hole wrap plates with a 1-1/2" or 2-1/8" top and 2-1/8" bottom with four or six inch center-to-center. For "through-bolted" locks, Trimco offers "Star Prep" Wrap Plates. All edge bore plates have "PEM-Nuts"; nuts that are mounted onto the wrap plate to insure the latch/bolt is properly and securely mounted. And for those who have custom applications, there are blank wrap plates.

For pocket doors, Trimco offers patent pending, ADA compliant 1069 Series Pocket Door Pulls that accommodate up to a seven-inch frame width standard but can be manufactured for different applications. These pulls can be used on 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" width doors. Three functions are available: passage, latching (non-locking) and full privacy.

Barn doors are becoming more popular and Trimco has a locking solution available in both mortise (high-use) and tubular applications.  The 1074 Series Barn Door Locks are available in multiple functions and levers styles and conform to ADA accessibility requirements.

A new service is T-Etch, a highly precise chemical etching process that removes a specific amount of the base material from flat metal surfaces, such as protection plates or push/pull plates. From that point, the job can be finished or color can be added to fill. Any logo, image and/or words in any sizes can be T-Etched. For more information, contact the factory.

Trimco can provide rapid design and production of sheet and cast metal products. A recent example is a school district that contacted Trimco regarding the replacement of Unit Locks in a number of their facilities. They wanted to install cylindrical locks using heavy-duty stainless steel mounting hardware with the additional benefits of vandal protection and latch protection. Within a few weeks, Trimco began manufacturing the new product, 5022A Unit Lock Adapter with Astragal.

To better serve their customers Trimco has opened three U.S.. These distribution centers are located are Pennsylvania, Missouri and Nevada.
