Hospital Security Survey

A recent survey of 380 hospital administrators by Guardian 8 Corp. found that one in three U.S. hospitals reported an increase in violence and assaults in 2014 despite widespread rising security budgets. Forty-six percent of the hospital administrators reported increasing their security budgets in 2014.

Reported increases in attacks and assaults included violence by patients and/or their families against emergency department personnel and staff such as nurses.

Number One Fire Door Deficiency

The number one fire door deficiency appears to be the wrong clearance dimensions around the perimeter of the closed door. On a significantly high number of fire doors I have seen and been told of, the door gaps are not the correct size.

Photo with Explanation

This photo is of a double door entry. The exterior door has the exit device mounted at the correct height, not inline with the rail. The interior door has the exit device mounted inline with the rail, which is too low and not in the middle of the door.

Finding Fire Door Labels

Fire rated doors are required to have a label. The position of the label is usually on the hinge edge with the corresponding frame label in close proximity. However, sometimes the label is on the top of the door. Most people are not tall enough to look down onto the top of the door. However, if you are more than six feet tall, use your cell phone camera to see the label. Take a photo in order to read label.

40 Bit versus 80 Bit Transponders

The Texas Instruments 40 bit transponder has been discontinued. Chips are sold out and key blank stocks are running low. The 80 bit transponder is backwards compatible to many – but not all ‑ of the 40 bit technology vehicles. However, a number of the Mazda (Ford) vehicles equipped with the 40 bit technology will not accept an 80 bit transponder if there are some programmed 40 bit transponders. This is why the the 40 bit transponder-equipped Ford/Mazda key blanks are increasing in price.

There is a work around. Use the eraser procedure in your programming device to remove all transponder values from the vehicle. Then, use device to program two 80 bit transponders. The remaining 40 bit keys can be on-board programmed.

FYI Fire Rated Opening

Any field modification to a fire rated opening does not meet code unless the door has been tested with the modification. The reason is the modification can potentially impact the fire resistance of the opening.

Clean Work

When drilling into a wall, here is a tip. Use blue painter’s tape and put two horizontal strips about three inches and about six inches below the hole being drilled. Do not attach the entire width of the strip, just enough of the bottom edge to keep the tape on the wall. Fold the upper edge so it will tilt out and catch most of the dust and paint debris from the hole being drilled.

Once the hole has been drilled, remove the tape, roll it up, catch any extra and throw away.

Blue masking tape should not pull paint off the wall. If the wall paint is cracked or damaged, do not use this method.

Less Work in the Workplace

Our digital lifestyle is creating a significant workplace problem. Employee phones are causing disruptions during work hours. Reports are stating that employee social media use is causing disruptions approximately every 10 minutes. Employees are spending hours every day checking and responding to social media posts instead of being productive. The latest news is a significant number of employees are emotionally disconnected from their jobs. Who would have guessed?

Car-opening Techniques: 2008-15 Dodge Avenger

This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturer's recommended techniques for opening the 2008-15 Dodge Avenger. The Avenger is equipped with vertical inside lock control linkage. The lower portion of the linkage is not protected and can be attacked and raised to unlock the locking mechanism.

Caution: Be careful manipulating a metal car-opening tool when in contact with the window glass. If the tool is wedged against the edge, the glass can break.

When using a through the door car-opening tool, tape the end to prevent marring the interior. It is also a good idea to using some diluted dish soap to prevent damage to the weather stripping.

Use the following opening methods to unlock the 2008-15 Dodge Avenger:

Use the High Tech Tools Checkmark Tool 66 to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Insert a wedge between the glass and the weather stripping directly above the front edge of the outside door handle assembly of the rear passenger door. Insert the 66 tool into the door cavity just forward of the wedge with the curved tip facing forward. Lower the tool until the curved tip is a few inches beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate counterclockwise slightly until the tip is pointing to the driver's side of the vehicle. Slowly raise the Checkmark 66 Tool until the curved portion of the tool contacts the horizontal linkage rod. Rotate the car-opening tool's handle towards the rear of the vehicle to slide the linkage to the unlocked position in order to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-42-LA “Long Arm Tool” car-opening tool and an inflatable wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge near the top rear corner of the front passenger door. Inflate the wedge. Insert the AO67 "Tool Sleeve" at the top edge of the doorframe. Insert the AO42-SL "Tool Sleeve" at the top edge of the doorframe. Carefully insert the AO42-LA through the sleeve and into the vehicle with the tip facing down. Reach the car-opening tool 41" into the passenger compartment towards the passenger door electric lock-unlock button. Depress the electric lock-unlock button to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Slide Lock Inverted Z-Tool, large end, and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge a few inches forward of the outside door handle assembly of the front passenger door. Insert the Inverted Z-Tool between the wedge and the rear of the front passenger door window opening. Slide the Inverted Z-Tool into the door cavity about six to eight inches. Rotate the tool one quarter revolution counter-clockwise so the tool swings under the exposed vertical lock linkage. Carefully pull on the tool to raise the vertical locking button fully to unlock the door locking mechanism. Open the door.

Use the Steck Manufacturing BigEasy “Glo” and a wedge to unlock the passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the wedge or inflatable wedge into the top corner area of the door. Once the door has been carefully wedged out, insert the BigEasy tool into the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool to position the tip against the electric lock-unlock button. Depress the electric lock-unlock button to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1017 car-opening tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge directly above the forward part of the outside door handle assembly. Carefully insert the TT-1017 car-opening tool so the hooked end can grip the vertical linkage rod from the outboard side of the door. Lower the tool until the shaft is against the weather stripping. Continue to lower the car-opening tool until the tip is approximately five inches into the door cavity. Rotate the tool counterclockwise until the tip of the TT-1017 contacts the vertical linkage rod. The locking button will move when contacted. Trap the linkage rod with the hooked tip of the tool. Pull the car-opening tool towards the front of the vehicle to bind the linkage rod. While maintaining forward pressure, pull upward to unlock the door locking mechanism.

The direction to rotate the door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
