2015 Ilco Auto/Truck and Classic Auto/Truck References

Kaba Ilco Corp. has introduced the 2015 Ilco North American Auto/Truck Key Blank Reference and the Ilco Classic Auto/Truck Reference. The 2015 Ilco North American Auto/Truck Key Blank Reference is the 33rd annual edition of the reference, containing 168 pages. An added feature this edition is drawings of key blanks below the manufacturer's name. The key blanks have the Ilco part number at the bottom. For me, being able to see a key blank while looking for a particular year model makes it easier.

The Ilco Classic Auto/Truck Reference covers domestic and "world" vehicles from the 1940s through the mid-1980s. These include current and discontinued models of cars and trucks.

To download the 2015 Ilco North American Auto/Truck Key Blank Reference and the new Ilco Classic Auto/Truck Reference, go to www.ilco.us, Literature & Support, Key Directory & References.

Printed copies will be available in early March from Ilco distributors.

Instructions Required

I recently toured a medical facility. I noticed that on a number of Sargent Profile electromechanical locks, there was a sticker just below the keypad with the words "HOLD ACCESS CARD AS SHOWN." It appears that some employees were having difficulty gaining access.

Chevrolet Captiva Update

Rental agencies are selling the fleet Captives. These Daewoo (2008 Saturn Vue) based small utility vehicles use the V2001- V3200 code series. Originally, I recommended using the CF302 card, which cuts a little deep and occasionally an originated key will not operate. However, the CF88 card is a bit shallower and seems to avoid this problem.

Read the Fine Print

While researching the electronic safe lock article in this issue, I discovered that at least one safe manufacturer stated on its web site that changing the combination on a mechanical safe lock voids the manufacturer’s warranty.

FYI Fire Rated Opening

Any field modification to a fire rated opening does not meet code unless the door has been tested with the modification. The reason is the modification can potentially impact the fire resistance of the opening.

2015 Ram Promaster City

Ram has introduced the 2015 Promaster City, a mini sized van available as a cargo van. The Ram Promaster City is a Fiat Doblò van rebadged for North America. The front wheel drive City is equipped with a four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It is going on sale in early 2015.

Access Control Specialist

A hospital in the southern California area is hiring. They want an individual who is experienced with mechanical and electromechanical lock mechanisms, etc. Instead of putting the job out for a locksmith, they decided to use the term Access Control Specialist, which includes more than just mechanical locks.

Automotive Security

A 14-year-old boy with under $20 in parts purchased at Radio Shack built a circuit board that performed the following functions (direct quote): "Windshield wipers turned on and off. Doors locked and unlocked. The remote start feature engaged. The student even got the car's lights to flash on and off, set to the beat from songs on his iPhone."

"For the automakers participating, they realized, 'Huh, the barrier to entry was far lower than we thought.' You don't have to be an engineer. You can be a kid with $14," stated Dr. Anuja Sonalker, lead scientist and program manager at Battelle, the world's largest nonprofit research and development organization.

I guess that a locksmith could provide a partial solution by adding a mechanical ignition lock. At least the vehicle cannot be moved.

Clean Work

When drilling into a wall, here is a tip. Use blue painter’s tape and put two horizontal strips about three inches and about six inches below the hole being drilled. Do not attach the entire width of the strip, just enough of the bottom edge to keep the tape on the wall. Fold the upper edge so it will tilt out and catch most of the dust and paint debris from the hole being drilled.

Once the hole has been drilled, remove the tape, roll it up, catch any extra and throw away.

Blue masking tape should not pull paint off the wall. If the wall paint is cracked or damaged, do not use this method.

Less Work in the Workplace

Our digital lifestyle is creating a significant workplace problem. Employee phones are causing disruptions during work hours. Reports are stating that employee social media use is causing disruptions approximately every 10 minutes. Employees are spending hours every day checking and responding to social media posts instead of being productive. The latest news is a significant number of employees are emotionally disconnected from their jobs. Who would have guessed?

Car-Opening Techniques:  Chrysler 300C  & Dodge Magnum

This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturers’ recommended techniques for opening the 2005-15 Chrysler 300C and the 2005- 09 Dodge Magnum. The 300C and Magnum are equipped with vertical inside lock control linkage.

Caution: Be careful manipulating a metal car-opening tool when in contact with the window glass. If the tool is wedged against the edge, the glass can break. It is also a good idea to use some diluted dish soap to prevent damage to the weather stripping.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2005-15 Chrysler 300C and the 2005- 09 Dodge Magnum:

Use the High Tech Tools 'S' Tool 47 to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Attach the rubber tip onto the 47 car-opening tool. Insert a wedge between the glass and the weather stripping just forward of the outside door handle in the front passenger door. Insert the 47 tool into the door cavity with the tip facing rearward. Lower the tool until the tip is at the bottom of the outside door handle assembly. Rotate the car-opening tool clockwise until the tip contacts the vertical linkage rod. The lock button will move when the tool contacts the linkage rod. Capture the linkage rod and twist the 'S' Tool to bind the linkage rod. With the linkage rod bound, lift the car-opening tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-38 “Honda Tool”, an inspection light and an inflatable wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge nine inches from the rear edge of the front passenger door window glass. Inflate the wedge. Insert the inspection light into the door cavity seven inches from the rear edge of the window glass. Identify the vertical linkage rod. Insert the small hooked end of the AO-38 car-opening tool five inches from the rear edge of the window glass with the tip facing forward. Lower the tool 10 inches into the door cavity. Rotate the tool 135 degrees counter clockwise and lift the tool one inch. Position the tip of the tool under the vertical linkage rod. Twist the tool to bind the linkage rod. While keeping the linkage rod bound, lift the AO-38 tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use Slide Lock Z-Tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge a few inches forward of the inside vertical locking button in the front passenger door. Insert the large end of the Z-Tool between the wedge and the rear edge of the front passenger door. Lower the tool approximately 5-6 inches into the door cavity. Rotate the Z-Tool ¼ turn counterclockwise for the tip to swing under the linkage rod. Pull up slowing on the car-opening tool to lift the vertical linkage rod to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. The vertical locking button will raise as the linkage rod is being lifted up. Some vehicles require additional lifting force to unlock the locking mechanism.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1017 car-opening tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge directly above the inside lock control button. Carefully insert the TT-1017 tool so the hooked end can grip the vertical linkage rod from the outboard side of the door. Lower the tool until the shaft is against the weather stripping. Continue to lower the tool until the tip is approximately six inches into the door cavity. Rotate the tool counterclockwise slightly until the tip of the TT-1017 contacts the vertical linkage rod. The lock control button will move when contacted. Pull the car-opening tool towards the front of the vehicle to bind the linkage rod. Pull upward to unlock the door locking mechanism.

The direction to rotate the door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
