Throughout the year, manufacturers of locks and door hardware make it easy for locksmiths to upgrade their skills and / or learn something new to help their locksmithing businesses prosper. Locksmith distributors are another excellent source for educational seminars and programs. The following is a sampling of the continuing education courses. Detex Factory Training

Detex has scheduled four factory training sessions throughout the year on its A019 Automatic Door Operator. Earn CEU credits at this three-hour Detex technical training class, 9 a.m. to noon.

Dates are: May 12, June 11, Aug. 20 and Nov. 12 at Detex headquarters in New Braunfels, TX.

Factory training classes are also offered on the following products: Advantex, Value Series, Exit Control Locks, Exit Alarms, Logic Controllers, Automatic Door Operators and EasyKits. Specific models for this class are: ECL-230D,VRA, DDH, ECL-230X-TDB. Hours will vary depending on topics. Advanced registration required to earn CEU credits from the San Antonio Locksmith Association.

PureAuto 2015 Schedule

Lockmasters again offers its popular PureAuto training series for automotive locksmiths. Classes planned for 2015 include:

Advanced Automotive Transponders. This class covers transponder systems made since 1996, programming procedures, key blanks, and tools for most transponder-equipped vehicles in North America. This will include the newest procedures and key blanks for the newest models. Learn about the CAN Systems and new PROX systems as well as laptop based programming options for some vehicles. Includes information on programming and troubleshooting: GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and VW/Audi.

Domestic Automotive. This class covers domestic lock identification, lock removal and service procedures, starting from 1994, an in-depth instruction with all variations of GM 10 Cut ignitions, Ford 8 and 10-Cut systems, and Chrysler 7 & 8-Cut systems. Instruction and use of proper tools including force tools, ignition picks, Vats interrogators and many other tools of the trade. Hands on usage of some tools included. Basic knowledge of domestic auto up to 1994 including GM 6-Cut lock systems, Ford & Chrysler pin tumbler systems is recommended.

Intro To High Security Automotive. High security continues to become more lucrative from year to year. This course includes the basics of high-security key systems, vehicle entry, key generation and lock servicing. The course will include information on the most popular High-security makes including General Motors, Ford, Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, VW/Audi/Porsche, Lexus, Saab and Volvo.Hands On key generation using decoding tools, Lishi 2-in-1 tools on GM & Ford and lock disassembly with HONDA, LEXUS, and VW. Students must have experience in domestic and import auto service, key generation and lock removal & repair.

Key Generation. This course offers the student an exciting opportunity to learn the skills needed to generate an automotive key. This extended hands-on portion of the class includes a wide variety of tools that will enable the student to experience success and gain confidence. Learn to sight-read keys, use scopes to read wafers, impression, use of Determinators, Kobra readers, AccuReaders, Lishi 2-in-1 tools, progressioning, keys by code and much, much more! This course is recommended for the locksmith who wishes to expand into automotive locksmithing, or learn how to better exploit their key generation skills.

Motorcycle Key Generation. This class will introduce students to the tools, skills and information that are useful for beginning motorcycle locksmithing. Students will disassemble and reassemble various motorcycle locks. Many types of lock systems will be covered. Students will learn the easiest way to generate keys in the extended hands-on portion of the class. This will include a wide variety of tools that will enable the student to gain confidence sight reading, impressioning and using the wafer readers. This class includes the basics of motorcycle key systems, special key cutting equipment, key blank selection and lock code information.

CyberLock

This seminar provides an introduction to the CyberLock access control system, covering basic design concepts and a detailed description of the hardware and software components. Students will see how the locks and keys are programmed, access schedules are created and access events are downloaded and viewed on the computer.

Videx also offers CyberLock Advanced Training, which covers all CyberLock cylinders available and will thoroughly present the features of CyberLocks, CyberKeys and CyberAudit software. The group will create a variety of applications on the computer, program the locks and keys, and retrieve the access events. Students in this class should have already completed the introductory course or be familiar with the CyberLock.
