Single-Door Access Control: Standalone Locks

Feb. 2, 2015
Options range from single-combination mechanical locks to touchscreen standalone locks to electronic lever locks

Ilco Unican was asked by a Canadian phone company in the early 1960s to develop a keyless lock for use in remote locations.  Ilco Unican combined parts from an existing push button cabinet lock and a mortise entrance lockset to make one of the first pushbutton locksets for commercial doors.  A new lock product category was born.

Original Ilco Unican Simplex mechanical locks were operated by one code combination. Economical, single-combination products such as Simplex, Codelocks, LockeyUSA & Preso Matic keyless mechanical locks continue to be made today.

As the demand for added features grew, electronics have been added to push button locks. Features such as multiple user codes, date and time settings, audit trails, wireless communication and simple addition or removal of user codes have extended the application possibilities far beyond the original single user code system.

Lock examples below primarily describe lever handle locksets. Most manufacturers have many additional models with features which may not be fully described.  Pushbutton locks products are also available for cabinets, lockers, safes and deadbolt configurations.
