Allegion Engage Technology Equipped Schlage Locks

Engage Technology is a wireless offline electromechanical lock mechanism based on the Schlage NDE Series cylindrical lock. This Storeroom function lock with Vandlgard has lock certifications including ANSI/BHMA A156.25-2013, ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011, Series 4000, Grade 1, UL 294 and UL 10C.

The Engage Technology equipped NDE Series cylindrical lock combines the latching mechanism, credential (prox and smartcard) reader, operating system, door position sensor and request-to-exit switch in one lock chassis. The lock fits the standard 161L door prep. The levers are field reversible.

The Engage mobile app registers and programs the NDE lock. Every NDE Lock has its own unique address that must be registered. This should be accomplished when first powered as anyone in range with the Engage app can discover the lock and register it. Once the registered, the NDE lock cannot be re-registered unless the lock has been "released" from the original registration.

The Engage mobile app can program up to one hundred locks. In addition, it gives permission to other app equipped Smart phones to gain access as well as Proximity or Smart Cards and fobs. Access is 24/7 only. The Allegion Engage mobile app is a free downloaded.

Blue Labeling

Blue labeling (private label) or house brand is a way companies can sell products that are difficult for a customer to determine their original manufacturer and their product number. This way, the customers do not know if they are getting a good deal or paying extra.

Costco is a good example of a company that sells a house brand. They sell a number of items under the Kirkland label. Kirkland does not manufacture the products under their label.

Some locksmiths are doing something similar to sell safes. They are removing the labels from the safe and selling it under a private name.

Safe Sales

When selling a safe to a physically challenged person, there are several things to consider. If the person is wheelchair bound, to gain complete access, the door must be opened approximately 160°. This open angle has been checked on a number of safes, most equipped with internal hinges.

Before selling a safe, make sure the physically challenged person cannot only operate the lock, but is also able to retract the boltwork, swing open the safe door and gain access to the contents. Equipping the safe with an electronic lock can make it easier dial the combination.

Apple iPhone 6

The good news is the Apple iPhone 6 has NFC (Near Field Communications). Unfortunately, NFC is locked, being just a part of Apple Pay and cannot at the present time be used for anything else. This may change in the future. However, without Apple support, NFC will probably not be fully accepted as a credential.

GFMS Integrates with WAMS

Stanley Security and Key Systems, Inc., has integrated the Omnilock Wi-Q wireless electromechanical lock with the Global Facilities Management System (GFMS). The result is the ability to control access to keys and other assets using the locks’ Wireless Access Management System (WAMS). The combined technology eliminates the need of separate software driven asset management equipment and incorporates real time access control. Access is controlled with existing user credentials and tracking information is maintained through the modified WAMS/GFMS software.

The result is tighter time sensitive control and knowledge of user activities.

Car-Opening Techniques: 2007-2014 Volkswagen Jetta

This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturer's recommended techniques for opening the 2007-2014 Volkswagen Jetta. This four-door sedan is equipped with front door electric lock-unlock controls. This hybrid electronic door lock system has no mechanical lock control. Probing within the door cavity will not unlock the locking mechanism because the front doors are equipped with bicycle style cables, not linkage rods.

Important: When attacking the inside door release handle or the lock/unlock buttons, cover the tool's tip with electrical tape to prevent marring. It is also a good idea to using some diluted dish soap to prevent damage to the weather stripping.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2007-2014 Volkswagen Jetta:

Use the  High Tech Tools’ Long Inside Access Tool #89 and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Carefully wedge out the front passenger door window directly above the inside door lock rocker switch. Insert the #89 car-opening tool into the front passenger cavity with the shaped portion is pointing forward directly above the wedge. Once started, reposition the wedge to permit the tool to be slid into the door cavity. Lower the car opening tool until the shaped portion is beneath the bottom of the window mechanism. Rotate the tool counter clockwise until the arch is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Carefully raise the #89 tool until the arch is just visible. Stop and immediately remove the wedge. Raise the tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. Position the tip of the car opening tool against the unlock portion of the rocker. Pull back on the tool to rock the button to the unlocked position, unlocking the locking mechanism.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-35 “MCOT-Wide” tool and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge 12 inches from the front edge of the front passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Insert the AO-35 tool into the door 8 inches from the front edge of the window with the tip of the tool facing forward. Lower the tool 15 inches into the door cavity until the bend is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate the tool until the arch is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Deflate the wedge.

Carefully lift the tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. Rotate the tool ninety degrees counterclockwise and manipulate the tip of the tool onto the top portion of the electric lock-unlock button. Carefully press against the top of the lock-unlock button, unlocking the locking mechanism.

Use the Slide Lock AutoBuster III to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism and two wedges with the first wedge near the side view mirror and the second wedge far enough back to accommodate the car opening tool. Insert the AutoBuster III down into the door cavity with the tool pointing rearward. Continue to lower the car-opening tool until the loop is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Remove both wedges. Make a slight clockwise twist and carefully raise the tool through the weather stripping and into the passenger compartment. Maneuver the tip of the tool into position along the upper portion of the power lock-unlock button. Manipulate the button to the unlocked position.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1036 car-opening tool and two wedges to unlock the passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the first wedge forward the inside door handle. Position the second wedge far enough apart from the first, leaving enough room to manipulate the car opening tool. Carefully insert the TT-1036 tool into the opening created by the wedges with the upper bend towards the front of the vehicle. Lower the tool until the upper bend is beneath the base of the window glass. Rotate the tool counterclockwise slightly until the bend is on the inside of the glass. Carefully raise the TT-1036 until you can just see the bend within the weather stripping. Stop immediately and remove the wedges. Carefully raise the car opening tool until the tip is within the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool using the tip to lever the inside door handle out as far as it will go. Then allow it to return to the rest position. The locking mechanism is unlocked and the door should be able to be opened by pulling up on the outside handle.

The direction to rotate the door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
