Surge Protection for Access Control Systems

Surge protection devices, also known as transient voltage surge suppressors, should be installed for all access control systems to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. Surge protection devices attempt to limit the voltage supplied to the electric circuitry, in an effort to prevent damage to electronic devices.  Voltage spikes can be caused by near lightning strikes, power outages short circuits, etc.

Identifying Users When Master Keying

Whenever I set up a Master Key System, I always use the job title, not the employee name, as the identifier. This is because employees change positions and companies, whereas the job Title does not. For example, the accompanying photo is for office door for the Sr. Vice President Financial Affairs and most likely will remain the same for many years.

car-opening Techniques: 2006-2014 Acura RDX

This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturer's recommended techniques for opening the 2006-2014 Acura RDX. This sport utility vehicle is equipped with bicycle style cables inside the driver and front passenger door cavities.

Caution: This vehicle uses multi-layer weather stripping at the base of the windows. Failure to remove the wedges before raising the tool into the passenger compartment may result in breaking the window glass.

Important: When attacking the inside door release handle or the lock/unlock buttons, cover the tool's tip with tape to protect the vehicle from the metal tool.

Use the following opening methods to unlock the 2006-2014 Acura RDX:

Use the Access Tools #89 Long Inside Access Tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Lubricate the area. Carefully wedge out the front passenger directly above the manual lock-unlock button. Carefully insert the #89 car-opening tool with the shaped portion above the wedge with the tip facing the front of the vehicle. Reposition the wedge. Continue to lower the tool into the door cavity until the shaped portion is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate the tool until the shaped portion is beneath the interior side of the glass. Carefully raise the tool until it can just be seen through the weather stripping. Remove the wedge. Raise the tool to expose the tip. Angle the car-opening tool in order to manipulate the tip of the tool against the door lock-unlock button. Pull on the tool towards the front of the vehicle to unlock the locking mechanism.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-35 “MCOT-Wide” tool, the AO-33 MCOT- Separator and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge 12 inches from the front edge of the passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Insert the AO-33 three inches from the front edge of the rear passenger door window with the tip facing rearward. Insert the AO-35 car-opening tool into the door eight inches from the front edge of the window with the tip facing rearward. Lower the tool 14 inches into the door cavity. Rotate the tool until it is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Deflate the wedge. Carefully lift the AO-33 MCOT-Separator Tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. Lift the AO-35 into the gap created. Rotate the AO-35 75 degrees counterclockwise and position the tip behind the manual lock-unlock button. Carefully rotate the button, unlocking the locking mechanism.

Use the Slide Lock AutoBuster III to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism and two wedges with the first wedge near the side view mirror. Lubricate the weather stripping. Insert the AutoBuster III down into the door cavity. Lower the car-opening tool until the loop is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Remove both wedges. Make a slight clockwise twist and lift the car-opening tool through the weather stripping and into the passenger compartment. Maneuver the tip of the tool into position for the manual lock button. Flip the button to the unlocked position.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1025 car-opening tool to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the two wedges eight inches apart just forward of the inside vertical locking button. Carefully insert the TT-1025 tool between the wedges into the door cavity with the upper bend pointing towards the rear of the vehicle. Lower the tool until the upper bend is beneath the bottom of the glass. Rotate the tool slightly having the bend on the interior side of the glass. Carefully raise the tool until it is just visible between the inside weather stripping and the glass. Stop immediately and remove the wedges.

After the wedges have been removed, raise the tool into the passenger compartment until the tip is visible. Manipulate the tool until the tip is against the manual lock-unlock button. With the tip pressed against the button, carefully manipulate the car-opening tool in order to flip it to the unlocked position, unlocking the door locking mechanism.

The direction to rotate the door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
