A Simple Solution

Editor’s Note: The following letter is in response to Gale Johnson’s July 16 Notes from the Editor enewsletter, The Law of the Land, about legitimate locksmith company names being infringed upon by potential scammers. Read the Law of the Land at www.locksmithledger.com/11575118

EDITOR:

There is a rather simple solution.  The original locksmith can register his company name as a trademark and once officially registered can then sue the new company for infringement.  There is precedent for stopping someone when the name is too much like a registered trademark in the same industry.

Becoming A Locksmith

EDITOR:

I am a licensed locksmith here in Florida. How should I continue to build this business? Is there any online school? Please advise Thank you for your time.

Hello Fred:

If you had asked that question 20 years ago, the answer would have been much easier to answer. At that time cars and buildings used keys. Almost every new car now has a keyless, push button starting system with a remote used for locking. Every lock company has an electronic division making electronic access systems for both commercial and residential applications. The metal key is losing importance.

To succeed in the locksmith business today, you must learn all you can about electronic security products. I would consult with your local locksmith distributor and find out what brand of electronic products they are selling. Ask your distributor if they provide classes or if the manufacturer they stock has online or in-house classes. Your customers will soon be asking for $1000 access control systems instead of $100 deadbolts. If you are prepared, the profits from your locksmith business are sure to increase in the near future.

Good Luck,

Editor Gale Johnson
