Collegiate Vehicle Hackers

VW wants to stop an academic paper's publication that reveals how to bypass and hack late model vehicles' anti-theft systems. The University of Birmingham in England wrote a paper that outlines how the electronic keys' (immobilizer code) algorithm can be defeated (reverse-engineered) with the right equipment and knowledge.

Restroom Dispenser Keys

A locksmith was out on a job and needed to provide the customer with a key to a paper towel dispenser. The lock securing the dispenser had two wafers in positions two and three. The cuts were what appeared to be a number two and a number three depth. The keyway according to the locksmith looked like it would accommodate an Ilco 1096EN. However, this key blank is not wide enough for the ward in the lock.

We recommended using the pre-cut E114 key, which is designed for dispensers. They are made by the Wind Lock Company. A substitute is the Ilco 1054UN key blank. You can order precut keys to operate these locks from Blue Dog The Key Company in Florida. Web Site: www.bluedogkeys.com.

Stylish Residential Lock Finishes

There are a large number of choices for residential lock finishes. Many of the newer finishes appear to be alternatives to Oil Rubbed Bronze (10B). The traditional Oil Rubbed Bronze has two issues. First, the final color can vary by manufacturer and by batch. Some of the newer finishes have either been chemically aged to give the look.

Offering the non-traditional finishes can provide an opportunity to up-sell your customers to new products. As an alternative to brass and antique brass, consider finishes including French Antique, Nickel, Satin Nickel, Aged Bronze, Rustic Bronze, Satin Bronze, Pewter, Antique Pewter, Iron Black and Flat Black. The above names are from different lock manufacturers. Some of these brand specific finishes are very similar.

Caution: Make sure that all of the customers locks are available from the lock manufacturer.

Car-Opening Techniques:  2004-12 Volvo V50 Estate

This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturer's recommended techniques for opening the 2004-12 Volvo V50 Estate, a five-door wagon. The five listed car-opening tool manufacturers recommended opening methods are to unlock the door operating the unlocking button or the inside release handle in the passenger compartment.

The vehicle has a sash style door with a heavy metal frame surrounding the door window glass. Do not attempt to force the wedge tool as the door frame can be bent.

Important: When using through the door tools, it is recommended to tape the end of the tool to prevent scratching the interior.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2004-12 Volvo V50 Estate:

Use the High Tech Tools Long Reach Tool 78SG to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin with a One Hand Jack System to wedge out the door enough to insert an inflatable wedge along the top of the front passenger door. Inflate the wedge to provide working room for the 78SG car-opening tool. Insert the tool into the opening between the window and the weather strip with the tip facing down. Insert a wedge beneath the tool to help guide it to the inside door release handle. Capture the handle and pull back to unlock the door locking mechanism and open the door. According to High Tech Tools, this opening method is for Extreme Emergency Opening Only.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-35 “MCOT-Wide” tool and an inflatable wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge 12 inches from the front edge of the passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Insert the AO-35 car-opening tool into the door seven inch from the front edge of the window with the tip facing forward. Lower the tool 10 inches into the door cavity. Rotate the tool until the arch is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Deflate the wedge. Carefully lift the tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. Rotate the tool 95 degrees counterclockwise and manipulate the tip of the tool to the electric lock-unlock button. Carefully the electric lock-unlock button, unlocking the locking mechanism. Follow the manufacturers instructions for removing the car-opening tool.

Use the Slide Lock Frameless Window Tool™ and a wedge to unlock the front passenger’s door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the wedge at the top rear corner of the doorframe to relieve gasket pressure. Slide the Frameless Window Tool into the passenger compartment above the wedge. Slide the tool in beneath the inflatable wedge. Carefully slide the car-opening tool to avoid the coupler damaging the car’s finish. Manipulate the tool over the inside door handle. Pull back on the handle twice to unlock the door locking mechanism. Open the door using the outside handle.

Use the Steck Manufacturing BigEasy “Glo” and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the plastic wedge or inflatable wedge into the top of the door. Insert the BigEasy tool into the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool to position the 90-degree bend tip against the lock release button or pull out on the inside handle to open the door.

Use the Tech-Train Productions Jiffy-Jak Vehicle Entry System and an inflatable wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by levering the rear edge below the corner of the front passenger door outward slightly to accommodate an inflatable wedge. Once the inflatable wedge has been properly inserted and inflated, insert the Jiffy-Jak into the created opening to the passenger compartment. Remove the tip and use duct tape to cover the threads to avoid damage to the trim. Work the end of the Jiffy-Jak between the handle and the handle trim being careful not to scratch the interior. Pull out on the handle to unlock the door locking mechanism and open the door.

The direction to rotate the driver's door lock plug to the unlocked position is clockwise.
