ILA Convention Educational Classes

The Instititutional Locksmiths Association will hold its 30th Annual National Education Conference Oct. 5-8  in Elk Grove Village, IL. Door & Hardware Institute Educational Programs

The Door and Hardware Institute (www.dhi.org) offers a wide variety of technical educational classes, including online classes, addressing subjects such as specifying hardware, fire door code compliance and door and frame requirements.

Registrations are now being accepted for the DHI Canada Fall 2013 Technical School Oct. 28-Nov. 2 at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel in Calgary, Alberta. The program includes six full days of classes, geared towards taking the CDC or AHC exam.

A comprehensive curriculum class includes 14 modules. Students can also opt for the following four different tracks:

Focus on CDC – Using Door & Frame Standards (CDC300) and Detail Doors & Frames (CDC305)

Focus on AHC – Detailing Hardware (AHC205) and Masterkeying (AHC200)

Discounts are available for students taking multiple tracks and employers sending multiple students. Enrolment in a module includes breakfast, lunch and two breaks each day plus access to the students’ lounge. Pre-registration is required.

Free IR School Security Seminars & Webinars

Locksmiths can spend a day or hour learning about K-12 schools and their security and safety challenges. You could be taught by Paul Timm PSP, one of the security industry’s most respected voices. Timm is a board-certified Physical Security Professional (PSP) and the president of RETA Security, Inc.  He is also a member of the Illinois Terrorism Task Force (ITTF) and one of the nation’s leading experts in school and campus safety.

The day-long seminars including learning how to identify and address key areas of vulnerability, best practices in current emergency preparedness standards, when and how to conduct a lockdown, and creative source of funding for school security. ALOA Basic Locksmithing

2013 dates have been announced for the ALOA Training Center Six-Day Basic Locksmithing Course at ALOA Headquarters in Dallas, TX.

Upcoming Dates are: Dec. 9-14.

Students will gain basic hands-on knowledge of locks and security related hardware. Students will work with basic locksmithing tools such as dial calipers, impressioning pliers soft face mallet, lock pick set, along with other locksmith specialty tools. Upon completion of this course, graduates have the knowledge required to function as an apprentice locksmith who can perform the following tasks:

  • Identify and duplicate keys
  • Service and adjust key machines
  • Rekey a variety of lock cylinders
  • Make original keys for a variety of locks; by code
  • Disassembly and impressioning
  • Bypass and/or pick common locks
  • Troubleshoot and service common cylinder and lockset malfunctions
  • Identify common lock hardware finishes and functions
  • Be familiar with Life Safety Codes and the ADA
  • Design and key a simple master key system
  • Know combination lock operation and changing methods

Upon completion, students receive a locksmith tool kit including a pinning kit, pin tray, follower, tweezers, key gauge, cylinder retainer removal tool, Kwikset cylinder removal tool, shim stock and round impressioning file. They also receive Ilco Key Blank Directory, PRP Resource Guide which includes the ALOA Locksmith Dictionary, 432-page reference manual, Life Safety Codes & ADA class manual and an ACE Certificate attesting 48 credit hours of CE instruction. An ALOA Fundamental Locksmith certificate will be issued to those who successfully pass the written test at the end of the course.

Videx: CyberLock

This seminar provides an introduction to the Videx CyberLock access control system, covering basic design concepts and a detailed description of the hardware and software components. Students will see how the locks and keys are programmed, access schedules are created and access events are downloaded and viewed on the computer.

Videx also offers CyberLock Advanced Training, which covers all CyberLock cylinders available and will thoroughly present the features of CyberLocks, CyberKeys and CyberAudit software. The group will create a variety of applications on the computer, program the locks and keys, and retrieve the access events. Students in this class should have already completed the introductory course or be familiar with the CyberLock.
