Labeling Locks and Keys
Have a bunch of the same locks to install? It does not matter if the locks are utility, rim, mortise or key-in-knob. Want to simplify your life in the long run? Label the lock and stamp the keys. It does not matter what letters and/or numbers you choose to use, but use them. This way, when someone needs a duplicate key you have a record of the key blank, lock type and bitting. By labeling the lock, when the lock is serviced, you know the history without having to disassemble and decode.
Interesting But Not Quite Legit
I was at a commercial build and saw this door lock. The lever handle is mounted vertically down. The inside handle is also vertical down. The handles are rigid on both the exterior and the interior. There is a buzzer button on the jamb. The latch bolt is always extended. An electric strike secures the latch bolt. When someone wants access or egress, someone has to activate the electric strike to release the latch bolt.

Installing a Lock Device
Sometimes you just cannot get the measurement perfect when installing a lock device such as a power door operator onto a hollow metal of aluminum doorjamb. If the lock device has an aluminum back plate, here is a possible solution. Sometimes one or two holes that do not exactly line up after a couple of screws have been installed. Take a correct size tap mounted into a drill motor. Slide the tap into the partial opening, and slowly thread the opening. The tap will remove some of the aluminum back plate and some of the doorjamb material providing a threaded opening that will accommodate the mounting screw.

Car-Opening Techniques: 2004-up Acura TSX
This month we will offer car-opening tool manufacturers' recommended techniques for opening the 2004-up Acura TSX. The 2004-up TSX is equipped with vertical locking buttons on the front and rear doors. The linkages within the door are completely shielded.
Note: some car-opening tool manufacturers have specific dates for their opening methods. Before attempting to unlock a vehicle, read and follow the manufacturers' instructions.
Warning: Remove wedges prior to bringing the car opening tool into the passenger compartment. If not, the pressure may result in a broken window. This vehicle has extremely tight fitting multi-layer weather stripping.
The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2004-up Acura TSX:
Use the High Tech Tools Inside Access Button Lifter 81 and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge near the door lock button. Insert the #81 car-opening tool into the door cavity with the tip facing rearward. Reposition the wedge to allow lowering of the tool until the hump is beneath the window glass. Rotate the tool until the hump on the passenger compartment side of the window. Carefully raise the tool, stopping when the arch is just visible. Remove the wedge. Raise the tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. More the tool until the tip contacts the door lock button. Raise the tool, lifting the button to unlock the locking mechanism. Pull the outside handle to open the door. Follow manufacturers' instructions to remove the car-opening tool.
Use the Pro-Lok AO-45 “Loop-D-Loop Tool” and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the wedge six inches from the rear edge of the split window divider. Inflate the wedge. Insert the long end of the AO-45 car-opening tool into the rear passenger door at four inches from the rear edge of the split window divider with the tip facing rearward. Lower the tool into the door cavity until the angle is beneath the bottom of the window. Rotate until the tools' angle is on the passenger compartment side. Deflate the wedge. Carefully work the angle of the tool into the passenger compartment. Slide the tool rearward until the tool's loop can slide over the manual lock-unlock button. Twist the tool to bind the loop onto the button. With the loop bound, lift the tool to unlock the door locking mechanism. Pull the outside handle to open the door. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for warnings and removal of the tool.
Use the Slide Lock Mercedes Strip™ to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Attach either the cord through the hole in the front edge of the strip. Carefully wedge the window open to provide a slot for the Mercedes Strip. Insert the knotted end of the Mercedes Strip into the opening behind the rear edge of the front door. Slide the tool into the opening far enough to position the button between the strip and the cord. Carefully pull back to trap the button. Maintain pressure and carefully pull up on the tool to unlock the locking mechanism. Pull on the outside door handle and open the door.
Use the Steck Manufacturing BigEasy “Glo” with the BigEasy Loop and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by first inserting a wedge or inflatable wedge into the top corner of the door. Once the door has been wedged out, insert the BigEasy tool with the Loop attachment into the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool to position the loop over the vertical locking button. Bind the locking button. Carefully lift the car opening tool to unlock the locking mechanism. Pull on the outside door handle and open the door.
Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1025 car-opening tool and two wedges to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting two wedges eight inches apart near the inside locking button and forward. Carefully insert the TT-1025 tool into the opening between the two wedges with the tip facing rearward. Lower the tool until the bend is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate the tool until the bend is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Raise the tool until you can just see the bend within the weather stripping. Stop and remove the wedges. Raise the tool until the tip is within the passenger compartment. Position the looped end of the tool adjacent to the vertical locking button. Entrap the locking button with the lasso. Lever the handle forward to bind the vertical locking button. Maintain binding pressure and lift the car opening tool to unlock the door locking mechanism. Pull on the outside door handle to open the door. Follow manufacturers' instructions to remove the car-opening tool.
The direction to rotate driver’s door lock plug to the unlocked position is clockwise.
