Major Mfg. Key Trap

Key control has been, is and will be one of the most important jobs for locksmiths. Enabling and limiting access is a balance that is not easily implemented. End-users need key control for one key to hundreds of keys for varying periods of time for operating different locks.

Major Manufacturing has introduced new Key Trap models, one of the basic forms of key control. A key trap offers key exchange without human interaction. The needed key is exchanged for a personally identifiable key. When the job is finished, the needed key can be exchanged for the personal key. A key is held captive at all times, ensuring the return of the key.

The Major Manufacturing Key Trap is based upon two 1-1/8” or longer mortise cylinders, enabling different keys to be used. Key Traps are available in one, two, three and four block gangs.

Note: The two Interchangeable Core mortise cylinders are not included.

Car-Opening Techniques: 2006-11 Chevrolet HHR

This month we will offer recommended car-opening techniques for the 2006-11 Chevrolet HHR. The HHR is equipped with inside vertical lock control linkage rods and lock buttons in the four doors. There are portions of the vertical locking rod that are unprotected, enabling in the door car opening tools to be used to unlock the door locking mechanism. The HHR was discontinued at the end of the 2011 model year.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2006-11 Chevrolet HHR:

Use the High Tech Tools 47 Tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge forward of the front edge of the outside door handle assembly. Attach the rubber tip onto the 47 Tool. Insert the car-opening tool into the passenger door cavity with the tip pointing rearward. Lower the tool into the door cavity in between the inner door frame. Rotate the tool counterclockwise to contact the vertical linkage rod. When the tool contacts the vertical linkage rod, the lock button will move slightly. Once contacted, capture the vertical linkage rod in the tip of the car opening tool. Bind the linkage rod and carefully lift the tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-07 Astro Tool, an inspection light and an inflatable wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge eight inches from the rear edge of the front passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions. Insert the inspection light 6 inches from the rear edge of the window in order to identify the vertical linkage rod. Insert the hooked end of the AO-07 tool into the door cavity 2 inches from the rear edge of the window glass with the tip facing rearward. Lower the AO-07 8 inches. Rotate the tool 45 degrees counterclockwise and lift the tool 1 inch. This should position the tip of the tool directly in line with the vertical linkage rod. Twist the tool counterclockwise to capture and bind the rod. Lift the AO-07 tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Slide Lock Vertical-Z™ Tool to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. With the tool perpendicular to the front passenger door, slide the box hook end into the door cavity until the vertical portion of the tool contact the window. Rotate the tool 90 degrees counterclockwise until the tool is pointing towards the front of the vehicle. Carefully lower the tool into the door cavity. When tool is approximately seven inches into the door cavity rotate the tool clockwise until the box end contacts the vertical linkage rod. Capture the linkage rod and lift to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1000 car opening tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. An inspection light is optional. Begin by inserting the wedge at approximately the middle of the outside door handle assembly. Carefully insert the short end of the TT-1000 into the door cavity with the shaft between the lock button and the rear edge of the window. Lower the tool into the door cavity approximately seven inches. Rotate the tool so the tip is pointed to the inside of the vehicle. Pull up on the tool while watching the inside lock button for movement. When the tool contacts the bend in the linkage rod, it will lift the lock button while unlocking the door locking mechanism.

The direction to rotate 2006-11 Chevrolet HHR driver’s door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
