Portable Power Supply

When working with 24VDC access control, sometimes you need easy access to instant power to test the operation of a component. Here is an inexpensive way to get that power.

I was recently visiting Command Access and was shown this battery system for 24VDC applications. Three 9volt batteries were wired in series, creating approximately 27VDC. Your actual voltage and amperage will vary depending upon the batteries.

When connecting batteries in series, the voltage doubles for the second battery and triples for the third. Thus, three 9volt batteries will produce three nines or around 27VDC.

Unlike regular batteries, 9volt batteries have specialized connectors that snap together. For this application, two 9volt batteries are placed side to side with the negative side of one battery adjacent to the positive of the other battery. Because of the dimensions, a third battery can attach to the positive connector of one battery and the negative connector of the second battery. Leaving an exposed positive and negative connector to which leads are attached. The example setup has an additional momentary switch.

This way the power runs from negative to positive to negative to positive to negative to positive.

The average capacity of an alkaline 9volt battery is approximately 500mAh.

Check each battery before connecting.

Do not use new and used batteries as the capacities will be different and the result will probably be one battery discharging faster.

Do not use different chemistry batteries (alkaline, NiMH, lithium) when connecting in series.

Spindle Chart

Progressive Hardware Co. Inc., has just created its new Spindle Cross Reference Chart. This 11” by 17” chart has photographs of more than 50 different spindles. The photos are used to help determine the exact spindle for the application. Manufacturer, type or application separates the spindles. The manufacturers include Lockwood, Sargent, Russwin, Yale, Marks, Norwalk, National and Arrow. Each spindle has a part number and description including type (straight, swivel or sectional), number of threads per inch or unthreaded, dimensions (square, center and length), number and if threaded holes and if there are removable centers or pin stops. Many of these spindles have been manufactured because the lock company is either no longer in business or has discontinued their manufacture.

To receive your spindle chart, email, call, fax or write Progressive Hardware Co. Inc., at 63 Brightside Ave., East Northport, NY  11731 Telephone 631-757-8866 Fax 631-757-8870 email bill@progressive-hardware.com.

Car-Opening Techniques: 2005-11 Cadillac DTS

This month we will offer recommended car-opening techniques for the 2005-11 Cadillac DTS. The DTS is equipped with linkage rods inside of the front and rear doors. The front and rear doors are equipped with vertical linkage rods with pin type lock buttons.

Note: Although the DTS can be equipped with supplemental air bags, they are in the seats, not in the doors.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2005-11 Cadillac DTS:

Use the High Tech Tools 47 Tool, strip saver and wedge to unlock the front passenger’s door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge just forward of the front edge of the outside door handle assembly. Insert the strip saver between the window glass and the weather stripping between the wedge and the vertical locking button. Insert the #47 car-opening tool into the passenger compartment through the strip saver with the tip pointing forward. Lower the tool until the tip is positioned behind the outside door handle. Rotate the tool clockwise to contact the vertical linkage rod. Once contacted, capture the vertical linkage rod in the tip of the car opening tool. Bind the linkage rod and carefully lift the tool to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-39 Double Slide Tool, an inspection light and an inflatable wedge to unlock the front passenger’s door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge ten inches from the rear edge of the front passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions. Insert the inspection light 6 inches from the rear edge of the window in order to identify the vertical linkage rod. Insert the AO-39 tool into the door cavity 8 inches from the rear edge of the window glass with the tip facing rearward. Lower the AO-39 122inches. Rotate the tool 45 degrees clockwise and lift the tool one inch to be positioned under the vertical rod. Lift the AO39 tool up to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Slide Lock Mercedes Strip™, a Wedge Shield and if necessary a wedge to enlarge the opening along the “B” pillar, in order to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Carefully wedge the window open to provide a slot for the Mercedes Strip. Insert the Wedge Shield to protect the paint and the weather stripping. Insert the banded end of the Mercedes Strip into the opening behind the rear edge of the front door against the Wedge Shield. Slide the tool into the opening far enough to loop the vertical locking button. Once the button has been looped, carefully pull up and out to trap the button. Maintain pressure and pull up on the tool to unlock the locking mechanism.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1001 car-opening tool to unlock the rear passenger’s door. Determine the distance from the bottom of the outside door handle assembly to the weather stripping and mark this length on the car opening tool. Insert the wedge just forward of the rear door window divider. If desired, insert an inspection light into the door cavity and determine the location of the lower horizontal rod. Insert the TT-1001 between the wedge and the divider. Lower the tool a bit farther down than the determined distance. Rotate the tool so the tip is pointing into the passenger compartment. Pull up on the tool to capture the lower linkage rod. Twist the tool to bind the linkage rod and lever the tool forward to unlock the locking mechanism.

The direction to rotate 2005-11 Cadillac DTS driver’s door lock plug to the unlocked position is clockwise.
