Door Closer Replacement Made Easy With The Design Hardware 316R Series

Aug. 3, 2011

Design Hardware’s new 316R Series Replacement Door Closer meets ANSI A156.4 – Grade 1 Standards. The 316R door closer has a UL Listing “A” label for installation onto a 3 hour fire door, and has the UL10C Positive Pressure rating. In addition, this door closer meets the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements within ANSI A117.1, which provides details, dimensions, and specifications so a facility will offer unobstructed entry and ease of use to all users with disabilities.

The heavy-duty Design Hardware 316R is a rack and pinion style door closer having a cast aluminum body and heat treated steel piston, spring and spindle. This non-handed closer has size 1 to 6 adjustable spring power, which is able to meet the five-pound opening restrictions. Latch and sweep controls are separate; the staked valves prevent backing a valve completely out of the door closer body.

A standard feature of the 316R is the adjustable back check valve that controls the door’s opening swing by increasing the opening resistance. This prevents the door from being thrown open by intention or wind.

The 316R Series door closer is available with aluminum painted or dark bronze painted finish. A molded plastic cover is included.

No Drilling Required

The Design Hardware 316R Series Replacement Door Closer is not just another door closer. The 316R features the patented Mounting Plate that enables the 316R closer to retrofit 32 door closers without having to drill new door prep holes. The principle behind the Mounting Plate is to attach the plate to the door using original door closer bolt pattern. Once the mounting plate is secured, the 316R Door Closer is attached to the Mounting Plate using the four threaded holes. This eliminates the problem of installing different door prep closer and having to drill additional holes through the door.

The Mounting Plate has 24 holes to accommodate different door closer manufacturers’ prep. The two-sided Mounting Plate is labeled for the hinge side and the handing of the door. The Mounting Plate’s holes are counter-sunk on both sides to accommodate Right Hand/ Left Hand Reverse and Left Hand/Right Hand Reverse installations.

The 316R door closer Mounting Plate is designed to retrofit Regular Arm, Top Jam and Parallel Arm installations for the following door closer models:

  • Corbin Russwin 3200, 3600, 6200, 6400

  • Yale 50, 150, 400, 3100, 3300, 3500, 4400

For most installations, the shoe/foot or parallel arm bracket mounting holes should be quite similar from one manufacturer to another.

The 316R closer comes with machine screws and through bolts (sex nuts), wood screws and self tapping machine screws to accommodate wooden, aluminum and hollow metal doors. A parallel arm bracket is included to accommodate Parallel Arm Installations. Accessories for the 316R include heavy duty arm, heavy duty hold open arm, adjustable hold open arm, friction hold open arm, blade stop spacer and an extended arm to accommodate a four to eight inch deep jamb.

Important: Before installing any door closer, make sure the door operates properly. This includes the opening, swing and latching.
