THE VATS-SMITH CONNECTION…

Lockcraft's new tool line helps locksmiths more than ever.

For vehicle code identification, connect both tester connectors to mating VATS connectors, which are located at the base of the steering column under the dash. Place the key code switch to "1" and attempt to start the engine with the proper mechanically cut key. If the engine starts, the vehicle key code is 1.

If the engine does not start, press the four-minute time. Wait four minutes until the time light goes out. Then turn the key code switch to the next position and attempt to start the engine again. If the engine starts, the vehicle code is 2. If the engine does not start, press the four-minute timer and repeat the procedure until the correct key code is found.

After the correct key code is determined, the fault test can be performed. Connect both tester connectors to mating VATS connectors again. Set the key code switch to the correct code and attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts, the defect is in the steering column.

For the steering column test, connect the tester as above. Insert the key in the ignition. The tester should read the correct key code. An "E" on the display indicates an open circuit. For other repairs refer to the factory service manuals to correct the problem.
