SARGENT Lock has introduced the wireless (WiFi) version of the Profile Series battery operated, standalone electro-mechanical lock. The Profile v.S2’s wireless technology eliminates the need for hardwired data network. The Profile v.S2 open architecture can operate using a building’s existing internet/intranet infrastructure for communications between the computer (server) and the wireless Profile v.S2 locks.
Wireless technology enables network controlled access at locations where it is not practical or cost-prohibitive to install wired locks. Network-controlled access enables management of each lock remotely.
Lock locations can vary with every facility. The use of a PDA or Data Transfer Unit will be eliminated, saving time and manpower. Now physically servicing the lock is necessary only to replace batteries, standard maintenance or to make repairs because the lock is having operating problems.
The SARGENT Profile Series v.S2 locks are WiFi 802.11b/g enabled. Up to 2,000 users can be programmed per lock. The Profile v.S2 has a 10,000-event audit trail. The locks support open standard WiFi network security with standard encryption techniques including WEP, WPA and LEAP.
SARGENT wireless technology provides access control features during both online and offline operation.
The SARGENT Profile Series v.S2 mortise, cylindrical and exit device locks meet or exceed Grade 1 ANSI A156.2 requirements. When installed with appropriate levers, these locksets meet ADA and Life Safety codes. The standard configuration is a 2-3/4” backset, accommodating a 1-3/4” thick door. The Profile v.S2 is a motor driven bored lock operating a 1/2” throw stainless steel latch bolt.
For this article, we will install a SARGENT Profile Series v.S2 cylindrical lockset onto a left hand (LH) wood door that separates the public area from the private area. Five doors in this building will be equipped with the Profile Series v.S2 locks. Four will be cylindrical locks, the fifth will be installed onto a medium (4”) stile aluminum glass exterior door. The door had to be replaced to accommodate the width of the lock. This Profile lock operates an exit device.
Prior to the installation, an electrician installed two gateways into the ceiling along the hallways. These gateways will provide sufficient signal strength for the five WiFi Profile locks. The two gateways were wired into the network router.
The door preparation requires six cross bore holes. One hole (2-1/8” diameter) is for the lock body with two thru-bolt holes (7/16” diameter). One hole (1-1/2” diameter) is for the wire run and the remaining two holes (1/2” diameter) are for mounting the Profile lock assemblies. The edge bore opening for the latch hole is a 1” diameter. Drill from both side of the door to avoid damaging the faces of the door.
For this installation, the locksmith did not install the Door Position Switch.
If the Profile v.S2 is being installed onto a fire rated door, the fire stop plate must be installed onto the outside of the door covering the wire run cross bore. If the door is not fire rated, SARGENT Lock recommends installing the weather conduit to prevent damaging the ribbon cable.
A vertical notch must be cut into the interior side of the wood door directly above the 2-1/8” cross bore and forward of the through-bolt to accommodate the wiring harness extending from the lock body. This notch protects motor wires from damage.
After the latch has been installed, align the lock through-bolts to 12 and 6 o’clock. Be sure to re-align the spacer bushing to fit into the rear of the lever. Slide the motor wires through the cross bore, then slide the lock body into the door.
With the motor wires in the notch, install the inside rose and the spacer busing.
Mount the outside escutcheon making sure the ribbon cable from the outside escutcheon slides through the 1-1/2” diameter opening onto the interior side of the door. If the lock is being installed onto an exterior door, be sure to place the weather seal gasket onto the door before mounting the outside escutcheon.
