Olympus FC10 Lock: Hon F24/F28 File Cabinets

The Olympus FC10 provides an aftermarket alternative for replacing the factory original lock.

Hon® F24/F28 vertical file cabinets manufactured after 1988 and Series 1000 vertical file cabinets use a rotary style cam lock to secure the two- and four-drawer models. What makes these file cabinets of interest to locksmiths is they are operated with a non-standard, cam style lock that is secured into the face using a spring clip. The lock face is round, ¾” in diameter, not oval like the pushbutton style file cabinet lock. The opening in the file cabinet front has two flat sides 5/8” apart.
Olympus Lock, Inc. introduces the patented FC10 Series replacement lock kit with installation instructions for these Hon file cabinets. The Olympus FC10 locks come with all parts necessary for complete lock replacement including the connecting link. A metal armature connects the cam to the locking mechanism.
The FC10 pin-tumbler housing and plug are manufactured from Zinc die cast material. This pin tumbler lock utilizes the National D4292 (5 pin) keyway.
Olympus FC10 locks use the 001-970 code series. The locks are factory combinated in four pin chambers. They are available in a variety of configurations including Keyed Alike, Keyed Different and master keyed.
FC10 locks are designed with the patented Olympus cylinder retainer staple, and a removable spring retainer to simplify the rekeying process. The cylinder retainer staple has two long legs that slide through the housing through the cutout towards the rear of the plug, securing the plug within the housing. A groove is cut into the threaded portion of the housing for the upper portion of the staple to slide into, permitting a nut to tighten the lock in place.
With the staple removed from the lock, the plug can be slid out of the face of the housing, permitting servicing or the combination changed. As an alternative, after removing the staple, the spring retainer can be slid off providing access to the springs and pin tumblers.
