2010 KIA SOUL

Over the last week or so, I have received three telephone calls from locksmiths having problems originating keys for a 2010 Kia Soul. They have received the key code and were unable to determine the cuts.

The problem is the key codes were incomplete. The Kia Soul code series is WC1001-WC3500. These locksmiths were given codes having only the “C”, no “W”. Aftermarket, non-transponder keys blanks are the Ilco KK8-P and Jet KK8-NP and KK8-PH.

MAGNETIC STRIPE CARDS

A number of state driver’s licenses make use of magnetic stripe technology. It is amazing the amount of information that is contained, so much so that several states have passed laws restricting driver’s licenses being swiped under certain circumstances.

When you travel to some hotels, they swipe your credit card and your driver’s license. This information is transferred to the magnetic stripe card that is your room key. When you check out, many people give back their “mag” stripe cards. The cards do get erased when a new person checks in. However, your card could be swiped by some unauthorized person, in order to gain your personal information as well as your credit card number. Maybe it is not such a good idea to return the magstripe cards that contain personal information.

JUST A SUGGESTION

Occasionally a hinge adjustment can go a little too exuberant. To bring the hinge back towards the neutral position, place a relatively small (about 3/8”) hex wrench between the two leafs near the hinge pin. With very little force, begin closing the door. As the leafs contact the hex wrench and a bit more closing pressure is applied, there is a good likelihood the hinge will begin to reshape itself towards the neutral position.

EVA-Dry Dehumidifiers

Just about every safe can have moisture build up because there is humidity in the air. Opening the safe door permits moisture to enter the safe. Closing the door traps the moisture and can result in the development of mold in carpet and corrosion or metal objects. A dehumidifier is designed to remove the moisture within a safe.

EVA-Dry Dehumidifiers offers two wireless dehumidifiers, designed to remove moisture without requiring batteries or access to house current. They are equipped with refined silica gel package that absorbs the moisture in your safe. The dehumidifier is placed into the safe, no electrical power required. The unit collects the moisture. As the unit collects moisture, a three color (blue purple pink) indicator lets your customer know the dehumidifier is working (blue and purple) and when silica gel package needs refreshing (pink). To refresh the silica gel, remove the package from the rear of the unit and fold down the plug on the back of the unit and plug it in any electrical outlet for 8-10 hrs. Unit will renew and dry out the moisture as shown by the indicator turning back to blue.

EVA-Dry Dehumidifiers can accommodate from 333 cubic feet to 500 cubic feet and are available in white or camouflage. They come with a five-year manufacturer's warranty.

For more information, contact EVA-Dry,  telephone 877-382-3790 or web site: www.eva-dry.com.

FREIGHTLINER FT CODE SERIES

The FT0001-FT3000 code series is used by 2003 and up Freightliner semi-trucks. The FT code series has seven spaces and five depths. This code series uses the Ilco 1588 (square head) or Y157 (oval head) key blank. Prior to 2003, Freightliner trucks used code series FL001-FL262 and Z001-Z262 (same codes). These code series have seven spaces and only four depths of cut. The FL and the Z code series use the Ilco 1588 key blank. The spacing is the same for the three codes series as well as the first four depths of cut.

HPC previously made their CX60 card for the 1200CM using the Chrysler L0001-L3580 code series. It just so happened that this code card would operate the FL001-FL262 and Z001-Z262 code series.

There is no card available with just the five depths of cut for the FT code series. To easily solve this problem, you can either use a card producing computer program and make a card or measure the distance between the third and fourth depths (which is approximately 5/16”) and draw a new vertical line for the fifth depth of cut. Once everything is properly positioned, use a pen to draw the line. Pencil lead can smear or disappear after a while. There should not be a problem originating keys for the FT code series.

Note: Not every FT code will use the number five depth of cut. Also, wafer tumbler locks are more forgiving and if you are off a bit, the key should operate.

FORD MYKEY

Ford Motor Company has introduced MyKey on the 2010 Ford Focus allowing owners to program a key that can limit the vehicle’s top speed, limit audio volume, encourage seat belt usage and sound chimes at 45, 55 and 65 miles per hour. Ford says MyKey will become an option on a number of their new vehicles.

Parents can program any operating key to the MyKey system using the vehicle message center, which updates the SecuriLock™ passive anti-theft system. When a MyKey programmed key is inserted into the ignition, the system reads the transponder chip in the key and immediately identifies the MyKey code, which enables the programmed default driving modes.

BROOKS INDICATIVE PADLOCKS

In addition to providing padlock protection, Brooks Tamper Indicating padlocks have tamper indication and deterrence features using the Brooks’ single-use seals.

Unlike traditional padlocks that can be opened and re-closed without any evidence of tampering, Brooks Indicative Padlocks feature a 1/8' diameter bored hole that passes through the body and shackle. Applying a uniquely numbered Brooks seal through this cavity prevents the padlock from being opened without first having to remove and destroy the seal.

Most of these padlocks are probably specially keyed for large trucking companies, etc., to ensure that once the product has been loaded into the trailer, tampering can be identified.

You may want to know your customer before making keys for these padlocks.

CAR-OPENING TECHNIQUES: 2003-10 Nissan Murano

This month we will offer recommended car-opening techniques for the 2003-10 Nissan Murano. The Murano is equipped with bicycle style cables within the door cavities and multi-layer weather stripping that creates a very tight fit against the window glass. Care must be taken when inserting, manipulating and removing car opening tools as these vehicles are equipped with multi-layer weather stripping at the base of the window.

Note: Failure to remove the wedges when using an “under-the-window” type of tool prior to bringing the tool into the passenger compartment can result in breaking the window glass.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2003-10 Nissan Murano.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-34 MCOT- Narrow Tool and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting an inflatable wedge ten inches from the front edge of the rear passenger door window. Inflate the wedge. Insert the AO-34 opening tool into the door one inch from the front edge of the window with the handle facing forward. Lower the car-opening tool into the door cavity. Rotate the tool beneath the bottom edge of the window glass. Deflate the wedge. Gradually, lift the tool into the passenger compartment. Once the tip is in the passenger compartment, rotate the tool 45 degrees clockwise and angle the handle 45 degrees forward to position the tip of the tool in front of the manual lock-unlock button. Rotate the button rearward to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Note: Carefully follow the car0opening tool instructions for proper removal of the tool.

Use the Slide Lock AutoBuster III™ car opening tool and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert two wedges, one as forward as possible and the second wedge behind where the car-opening tool will slide into the door cavity. Carefully insert the car-opening tool into the door cavity with the handle pointing forward. Once the loop is beneath the weather stripping, remove the wedges to relieve pressure on the interior side of the glass. Rotate the Lock AutoBuster III car opening tool clockwise slightly as the tool is carefully lifted. Continue to raise the car-opening tool until the loop and the tool tip are within the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool and flip the lock control rocker to the unlocked position.

Note: To avoid problems removing the AutoBuster III car-opening tool, try walking the tool as far forward as possible. Slide Lock also recommends rolling down the window a few inches. After the loop in the door cavity roll up the window and insert the wedges before final removal of the AutoBuster III.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1015 car-opening tool and two wedges to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting two wedges about eight inches apart near the center of the window. Carefully insert the TT-1015 tool into the door cavity with the hooked end facing rearward. Carefully lower the tool without rotating until the bend of the tool is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate the tool inboard slightly and raise the tool slowly and carefully. The moment the tool bend can be seen within the passenger compartment, stop and remove the wedges. After the wedges have been removed, raise the tool until the tip is within the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool until the tip is just in front of the lock control rocker. Use the tip of the tool to flip the rocker to the rear and unlock the door locking mechanism. As an alternative, the tool can be used to pull the inside handle in order to open the door. This opening method can be used on the 2003-10 Infiniti FX45.

The direction to rotate the 2003-10 Nissan Murano driver’s door lock plug to the unlocked position is clockwise. There is no key lock on the front passenger door.
